eBay fee calculator
How eBay fees are calculated
eBay seller fees come down to one main charge. When an item sells, eBay keeps a final value fee: a percentage of the total amount of the sale plus a fixed fee per order. The total amount of the sale is everything the buyer pays: the item price, shipping, handling and, on eBay.com, sales tax. There is no separate payment processing fee — eBay handles payments itself.
| Fee | When it applies | eBay.com |
|---|---|---|
| Final value fee | every sale; the rate depends on the category and can drop above a price threshold | 13.6% up to $7,500 per item, 2.35% above, in most categories |
| Per-order fee | every order | $0.30 for orders up to $10, $0.40 above |
| International fee | the buyer or the delivery address is abroad and you ship it yourself | 1.65% of the total amount of the sale |
| Insertion fee | after your free listings for the month are used up | $0.35 per listing; 250 free listings a month |
| Below Standard surcharge | your seller level is Below Standard | +6% of the total amount of the sale |
The formula
Total amount of the sale = item price + shipping + sales tax. eBay fee = total × category rate + per-order fee (+ international fee, if any). For a $100 item with free shipping and no sales tax in most categories: 100 × 13.6% + $0.40 = $14.00, and $86.00 comes to you.
The calculator works for one item in one order and for sellers without an eBay Store: Store subscribers have their own fee tables.

How to price on eBay so the fee does not eat your margin
Fees are taken from the selling price, so a markup on cost alone always leaves less than you planned. Work back from the price instead: the break-even price in the calculator is the lowest price at which the sale still covers the item cost, your shipping cost and every eBay fee.
For a single rate the formula is: price = (cost + fixed fees) ÷ (1 − fee rate − target margin). A $30 item with $6 shipping charged and $6 shipping paid, in most eBay.com categories, breaks even at $36.13.
- Count shipping in: eBay charges the fee on the shipping the buyer pays.
- Check the category: 6.9% and 12.9% in the UK are very different prices.
- Recalculate when the purchase price changes — the fee changes with the price.

On eBay.com most categories cost 13.6% of the total amount of the sale (price, shipping and sales tax) up to $7,500 plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 for orders up to $10). Some categories are higher (15.3% for books, movies and music) or lower (6.7% for guitars). Private sellers based in the UK pay no final value fee on eBay.co.uk.
How much does eBay take from a $100 sale?
$14.00 in most eBay.com categories with free shipping and no sales tax: 13.6% × $100 = $13.60 plus the $0.40 per-order fee. With 8% sales tax the fee grows to $15.09, because eBay charges it on the tax too.
Are eBay fees 15%?
Not in most categories: the standard eBay.com rate is 13.6% plus $0.40 per order. 15% applies to women’s bags up to $2,000, jewelry up to $5,000 and the first $1,000 of a watch; books, movies and music are 15.3%.
How much does eBay charge for a $5,000 sale?
$680.40 in most eBay.com categories: 13.6% × $5,000 plus $0.40. The rate drops to 2.35% only on the part of a sale above $7,500.
Is selling on eBay UK free for private sellers?
Yes for private sellers based in the UK: no final value fee and no regulatory operating fee. You pay for optional upgrades, for more than 300 listings a month (35p each) and a 3% international fee when the item goes abroad. Business sellers pay a fee by category.
Does eBay charge a fee on shipping?
Yes. The final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, and that includes the shipping the buyer pays. Offering free shipping and raising the price gives the same fee.
Does eBay refund the final value fee?
If you refund the buyer or cancel the sale you may be eligible for a fee credit under eBay’s fee credits policy. Insertion fees are not refunded.
Are fees different with an eBay Store?
Yes: Store subscribers get more free listings and their own fee tables. This calculator uses the fees for sellers without an eBay Store.
