Anchor Without Complexity: A Simple Explanation
Where are anchors hidden and how to use them?
Have you ever wondered why some websites take off in search results as if on wings, while others, with no less high-quality content, gather dust on the Internet's outskirts? For me personally, it was a real detective story until I plunged into the world of SEO magic. And, believe me, one of the most exciting chapters of this detective story is anchor links.

Initially, when I was just starting out in digital marketing, anchor was something of a curse word for me, a complicated term from textbooks that seemed to exist somewhere in a parallel reality from real sales. "Anchor, web analytics, all that...", Igor, an acquaintance of mine who owns the online store of sportswear "SportLife", grumbled when I tried to explain to him the need for internal linking. "I'd like customers in my store, not these anchors of yours!" His store, it must be said, was going through hard times. Search engine traffic was minimal, advertising on social networks was eating up the budget, and sales barely covered the rent.
The idea arose spontaneously, as often happens. Sitting in a cafe, over a cup of coffee, leafing through the statistics of "SportLife", I suddenly realized that the site, although filled with quality content - product descriptions, articles on a healthy lifestyle, advice on choosing sports equipment - was like a labyrinth without signs. The pages were not logically connected, users came to one page and immediately left, not understanding where to go next. And then it dawned on me: anchors! After all, they are the very pointers that can direct the user, keep him on the site and, most importantly, help search robots better understand the structure and subject matter of the resource.
But how to convince Igor, a person far from SEO subtleties, of the effectiveness of these very "anchors"? Simply explaining the theory is not an option. An example, a story, something that would hook him emotionally was needed. And I remembered a case from my practice, when a seemingly hopeless online store of children's toys "Rainbow of Childhood" thanks to competent interlinking using anchors not only floated to the surface of search results, but literally took off.
The owner of "Rainbow of Childhood", a nice woman named Elena, came to me in despair. "You see," she said, nervously fiddling with a cup of tea, "I have great toys, good prices, but the site is invisible. No one comes in, no one buys. Maybe it's time to close down?" Her words sounded like a death sentence. The situation was critical, but, as the saying goes, "the devil is not as black as he is painted." I audited the "Rainbow of Childhood" website and found the same problem as "SportLife" - disjointed content, no internal linking. The product pages lived their own lives, the blog articles lived their own, and there was no connection between them.
"Elena," I said, "imagine that your site is a city. Right now you have houses (pages) in this city, but no roads or signs. People come to one house and have nowhere else to go. Anchors are exactly those roads and signs that we can build." I explained to her that an anchor is the text of a link, not just https://www.example.com, namely words that are clickable and lead to another page. For example, instead of the faceless "more here" use "buy educational toys for babies" and put a link to the corresponding category of goods. According to Elena, she then thought it was "some kind of nonsense", but trust in me, apparently, overcame skepticism.
We started small – we optimized product cards by adding anchor links to similar products and categories. Anchor links leading to the corresponding sections of the store began to appear in the blog articles about child development. For example, in an article about choosing a bicycle for a child, an anchor appeared "buy a children's bicycle" with a link to a bicycle catalog. And what do you think? A couple of weeks later, Elena called me, her voice trembling with excitement. "Leonid," she said, "this is incredible! Traffic to the site has gone up, sales have started to grow! What have you done, a wizard?" And there was no magic, just the correct use of anchors.
This is the story I told Igor from SportLife. Having seen how a "nonsense" called "anchor" can transform a business using the example of "Rainbow Childhood", Igor was fired up by the idea. "So," he asked, with obvious interest in his voice, "if I understood correctly, instead of simply writing 'read here' under an article about running, you should write, for example, 'choose running shoes' and a link to the section with running shoes?" "Exactly!" I answered, smiling. "And this is just the beginning. There is a whole anchor magic that can skyrocket your sales!"

How Anchor Worked for "SportLife": Step-by-Step Instructions
| Step | Description of action | Result for "SportLife" |
|---|---|---|
| 1.Website and content audit | We analyzed the site structure and identified pages with high potential but low traffic. | We found product description pages and blog articles that were doing virtually no sales. |
| 2.Semantic core | We have compiled a list of keywords and phrases relevant to the store's theme and user requests. | We identified queries like "buy a tracksuit", "fitness sneakers", "how to choose dumbbells", etc. |
| 3.Internal linking with anchors | We implemented anchor links into page texts, linking relevant pages together. We used exact keyword matches in anchors. | In product cards, we added anchors "view similar products", "select size", "order now". In blog articles - "buy sportswear", "fitness accessories", "yoga products". |
| 4.Monitoring results | We tracked changes in traffic, search engine rankings, and conversion after implementing anchor linking. | Within a month, we noticed a significant increase in organic traffic and an increase in the number of orders through the site. The site's positions for key queries improved. |
Diversity of anchors: from keywords to diluted phrases
In my practice, time after time, I am convinced that the secret often lies not only in the content, but also in the skillful use of anchor links. And you know, here, as in cooking, not only fresh ingredients are important, but also the right proportions and spices.

I remember how the owner of a small online store of craft leather goods "LeatherSoul" approached me. Pavel, that was his name, was in despair. He had put his soul and his last savings into his project, the photos of the products were simply a sight to behold, the descriptions were like poems, but there were almost no buyers. "Leonid," he complained to me when we met, "it feels like my site is simply invisible to Google! I've already tried everything: I launched contextual advertising, posted on social networks, but to no avail!"
Having studied his site and current promotion strategy, I immediately understood what the problem was – anchor links. Or rather, their complete absence. Pavel, trying to save money, entrusted "SEO promotion" to a freelancer, who, as it turned out later, simply placed links to his site wherever and with any anchors. Or rather, it was difficult to call it anchors – a solid set of high-frequency keywords, such as "buy a leather backpack", "handmade wallet", "genuine leather belt". Naturally, Google, having seen such "optimization", not only did not appreciate it, but also, most likely, sent the site to the "sandbox".

"Pavel," I told him then, "imagine that the anchor is a pointer. If all the pointers lead to the same word, like 'buy,' it looks unnatural and even suspicious. Search engines see it as an attempt at manipulation, and it simply scares off users. We need to use a variety of 'pointers' to show that your site is a valuable and versatile resource."
And here we come to the most interesting part – the types of anchor links. I explained to Pavel that anchors, by the concentration of keywords, can be divided into two main types: undiluted and diluted.
Undiluted anchors – these are exactly the same “pointers” that contain only a direct entry of the key phrase, without any additional words. For example, if we need to promote a page about creating a Telegram channel, the undiluted anchor will look simply like “Create Telegram channel ". Such anchors should be used with extreme caution and in minimal quantities, especially for young sites, so as not to arouse suspicion in search engines. In Pavel's case, it was the overuse of undiluted anchors like "buy a leather belt" that played a cruel joke on him.
Diluted anchors, on the contrary, include the key phrase, but in a "diluted" form, with the addition of additional words. It's as if we refined the index, making it more natural and informative. For example, for the same page about Telegram channels, the diluted anchor could be "How to create a Telegram channel for business. Complete instructions " Such anchors look much more organic and natural, both for search engines and for users.

But that's not all! Within these two main types, there is a whole variety of anchor types that differ in the frequency of the search queries they contain. I explained to Pavel that there are:
High frequency anchors. These are usually the shortest anchors, consisting of 1-2 words and often matching the high-frequency keywords for which the site is optimized. Example: "Telegram channel " They need to be used wisely, dosing and diluting with other types of anchors.
Mid-frequency anchors. They are a little longer, usually 2-4 words, and are already diluted. Example: "Create Telegram channel " This is the golden mean and it is on them that the main emphasis should be placed in most cases.
Low frequency anchors. The longest and most diluted anchors, which can include both high-frequency and mid-frequency queries. Usually contain 7-8 or more words. Example: "Step-by-step instructions on how to create your own Telegram channel for free and quickly " These anchors are ideal for creating a natural link profile and attracting targeted, long-tail traffic.
"You see, Pavel," I summed up, "anchor text is like seasoning for a dish. Too much salt, and the dish is spoiled. Too many high-frequency anchors, and the site is under filters. We need to create a balanced 'bouquet' of different types of anchors, so that both search engines like it and users understand where the link leads."
We began the painstaking work of cleaning and rebuilding the LeatherSoul link profile. We removed all the unnatural, "key" anchors, replaced them with diluted, branded, generic and LSI. Added naturalness and variety. And you know what? A few months later, Pavel's site seemed to come to life! Traffic began to grow, search engine rankings began to climb, and orders began to pour in. Pavel was in seventh heaven. "Lyonchik, you're just a magician!" he exclaimed at our next meeting. "I thought my business was doomed, but you brought it back to life! Now I tell all my friends about your anchor magic!"
So, using the example of "LeatherSoul", I was once again convinced of the power and importance of the correct use of anchor links. And remember, the main thing is balance and naturalness. Do not overdo it with "salt" in the form of high-frequency anchors, add "spices" in the form of diluted and low-frequency phrases and your site will definitely "sparkle" with new colors in search results!

How to diversify anchor text and avoid keyword spam:
| Step | Description | How to achieve |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Audit of current anchors: Analyze existing anchor links, identify biases towards undiluted or high-frequency anchors. | Use SEO tools to analyze your link profile, pay attention to the frequency of use of different types of anchors. |
| 2 | Compilation of the semantic core: Determine the key queries for which you want to promote the site, divide them into high-, medium- and low-frequency. | Use keyword selection services, make a list of relevant queries for each promoted page. |
| 3 | Dilution of high frequency anchors: Replace some of the direct occurrences of high-frequency keys with diluted and low-frequency analogues. | Use phrases with the addition of clarifying words, synonyms, LSI keys. For example, instead of "buy a phone" - "buy a new smartphone inexpensively". |
| 4 | Using branded and generic anchors: Include anchors with the brand name in your link profile, as well as general phrases like "here", "more details", "on the site". | Dilute "key" anchors with branded and generic ones, strive for a natural ratio of different types of anchors. |
| 5 | Regular monitoring: Track the dynamics of your website's positions and link profile, and adjust your strategy if necessary. | Use SEO tools for monitoring, analyze the effectiveness of the changes made, adapt the strategy if necessary. |

Hello everyone! 🚀 I've been thinking about the power of anchor links in marketing. How relevant do you think they are now and which strategies work best? Let's discuss how anchors can explode sales! 💥
John
Leonid, great topic! 👍 I've always wondered how to use anchors for SEO. Are there any new tricks worth knowing in 2024?
Ingrid
Hi! 👋 In my practice, I noticed that thematic anchors work much better than general "here" or "there". For example, for an online clothing store, the anchor "buy a red dress" brings more traffic than just "view the catalog". Has anyone else noticed this?
Antoine
Ingrid, interesting! What about diluting the anchor list? I heard that keyword spamming can be harmful. Leonid, what do you think about this?
Leonid Vlasov
Antoine, absolutely right! Anchor spamming is a thing of the past. Naturalness and diversity are important now. Use LSI keywords, dilute direct entries, add branded and anchorless links. The main thing is to think about the user, not just about search engines. 🤔
Isabella
Ingrid, I completely agree with you about thematicity! 👍 I also noticed that long anchors that accurately describe the content of the page work surprisingly well. It's as if search engines understand the context better. Maybe someone tested long anchors?
Patricia
All this "magic" with anchors... 🙄 In my opinion, it's all some kind of dancing with a tambourine. The main thing is quality content, and not these trendy words of yours. The algorithms change every week anyway, you'll get tired of adjusting.
Marco
Patricia, I wouldn't say so! 😜 Anchors are like navigation for users and search engines. Good anchors help to understand the structure of the site, improve usability and, as a result, conversion. Maybe it's not "magic", but it's definitely a working tool if you know how to use it.
Katarzyna
Marco, I agree! The tool works, but how exactly to use it for different purposes? For example, to promote a new product - which anchors are best? Any practical advice?
Oleksandr
Katarzyna, for a new product I would focus on brand and species anchors. For example, "new smartphone [brand name]" or "review of [product name]". You can also use anchors with a call to action, like "learn more about [product]" or "buy [product] at a discount". The main thing is that the anchor sounds natural in the context. 😉
Leonid Vlasov
Oleksandr, great tips! 👍 Brand and species anchors are really trending now. And I'll add on my own - don't forget about image anchors! They also work great and add variety to the link profile.
John
What about internal links? How important are anchors for them? For example, if I want to interlink blog posts, what anchors are best to use?
Ingrid
John, for internal links I use anchors that reflect the essence of the article I am linking to. For example, if the article is about "how to choose an anchor", then I make the anchor approximately the same. The main thing is that the user immediately understands where the link leads. This is useful for SEO and convenient for users. 😊
Antoine
Ingrid, I agree, it makes sense! Internal links with relevant anchors are like internal navigation on the site, it helps both users and search engines. 👍
Isabella
Great discussion! 👍 I learned a lot about anchors. Thanks to everyone for the useful tips! I will use them in my work. 😉
