Lithuanian Railways is investing €10.1 million in replacing the Russian security system with a Ukrainian one
Lithuanian railway operators are abandoning Russian locomotive safety systems and investing in a Ukrainian alternative, increasing the level of national security.
Investments in security
Replacement of outdated systems
Lithuanian Railways Group of Companies (LTG Group) will replace the Russian security system of "CLUB-U" locomotives for Ukrainian development from SRPA Impulse, which won the 2023 tender. This is reported on the group's official website.
The server of the outdated "CLUB-U" system was disabled back in 2017, as it had no connection with the main information systems and critical infrastructure of LTG. In addition, the radio stations, which were used to receive commands and transmit data via the GSM-R radio channel, were dismantled.
Guarantee of national security
"We aim to abandon the Russian locomotive safety system "CLUB-U" as soon as possible in order to guarantee the use of a safe system and supply of spare parts for all LTG Group locomotives and rolling stock. Although we manage risks and ensure safety even when using CLUB-U systems isolated from other systems, our goal is to install equipment as soon as possible, fully compatible with the interests of national security and with a guaranteed supply of spare parts from countries friendly to Lithuania," said Gediminas Šečkus, chief LTG Group sustainability specialist.
Modernization stages
- According to the contract, the Ukrainian system from SRPA Impulse will be implemented in stages, replacing the Russian system with 163 locomotives: 35 LTG Link, 111 LTG Cargo and 17 LTG Infra locomotives, as well as in self-propelled wagon depots. In total, LTG Group will invest 10.1 million euros in this project.
- Four "Geležinkelio tiesimo centras" (GTC) locomotives are already equipped with the Estonian safety system.
- The installation of the new safety system is part of the FREE Rail program initiated and implemented by LTG Group. The goal of FREE Rail is to integrate the railway sector into the European railway system and increase sustainability.

Poof, again a bunch of fuss over supposed "national security". Was the old Soviet system so bad? Probably just another way to justify huge expenses 💰🙄

Abandoning Russian systems and switching to Ukrainian developments is a powerful step in the direction of technological independence and security. Investments of 10.1 million euros are significant funds, but they will allow modernization of Lithuanian railways. 👍🇺🇦

It amazes me that even a small company like SRPA Impulse was able to win the tender and get the contract to replace the security systems for the Lithuanian railways. This proves the high level of Ukrainian IT developers 💻👏

Hey, calm down with your Ukrainian euphoria. What is so special about these new systems? Most likely, just business and politics as usual. 🥱

Pierre, I understand your skepticism, but the introduction of new systems is not only a matter of security, but also an opportunity for Ukraine to present its innovative developments at the international level. I think this is a step forward for both countries 🇺🇦🇱🇹
