YouTube expands its horizons: Shorts are now up to 3 minutes
YouTube is expanding options for content creators by increasing the length of Shorts to three minutes and introducing new features in an effort to compete with TikTok and meet user demand.
The evolution of YouTube Shorts
Increasing video length
Starting mid-October, content creators will be able to upload Shorts up to three minutes long. This decision by YouTube was made in response to numerous requests from users. It's worth noting that rival platform TikTok already allows videos up to 10 minutes long, gradually increasing the time limits in recent years.
Innovative tools for creators
YouTube has introduced a new templates feature that allows creators to use other Shorts formats. Creators will be able to sync their clips with popular audio tracks from other videos. This option is reminiscent of a similar feature on TikTok, where users can choose pre-made video styles and customize them to suit their needs.
YouTube Development Strategy
The company is actively promoting Shorts as an alternative to TikTok, adding similar features and investing in rewarding short-form content creators. However, YouTube acknowledges that some of its audience prefers the longer videos native to the platform. In this regard, the “show fewer Shorts” option has been added, which temporarily reduces the number of short videos in the user’s feed.
Premium Subscription Changes
YouTube recently increased the cost of its premium subscription significantly. In European countries, the price of YouTube Premium has increased by 50%, but in Ukraine there have been no changes yet.

YouTube is finally increasing the length of Shorts to 3 minutes! 🎉 Now you can create more detailed content without losing the dynamism of short videos. Do you think this will help compete with TikTok?
Hans
I agree, Isabella! This is great news for creators. More time means more opportunities for creativity. But TikTok is still ahead with 10-minute videos. I wonder if YouTube will catch up?
Sophie
I think 3 minutes is the perfect balance. Enough to develop the topic, but not so long as to lose the viewer's attention. And the templates feature sounds fun! 😄 Has anyone tried it yet?
Antonio
Guys, have you noticed that YouTube has added an option to 'show fewer Shorts'? This is great for those who prefer classic long videos. I personally am for a variety of content!
Olaf
Oh, these newfangled things! Why do we need these Shorts anyway? Previously, we watched normal videos and that was enough for everyone. And now all they do is copy TikTok. No originality! 😒
Amelie
Olaf, don't be such a grump! 😉 Shorts are a great way to quickly consume content or share an idea. And with the new duration you can create even more interesting videos. Isn't that cool?

What interested me most was the template function. This is a great tool for novice creators! You can easily create cool content even without much experience. I think this will attract a lot of new authors.

By the way, about the Premium subscription. Has anyone noticed the price increase in Europe? There are no changes in Ukraine yet, but I wonder how long this will last. 🤔 Although, given the new features, maybe it's worth it?
