YouTube sets new rules for children: you can read comments, but not reply
YouTube is implementing new parental control settings that limit children's ability to leave comments, allowing them to only be read under parental supervision.

Parental Control Settings
YouTube is preparing to update its parental control settings. From now on, children will only be able to view comments under parental supervision, but will not be able to post their own comments or participate in live chats. This innovation will apply to two settings: "Explore more" and "Most of YouTube".
Child Protection Restrictions
The Explore More setting allows kids to watch rated videos 13+, while "Most of YouTube" offers older kids access to most YouTube content, excluding adult content. The new restrictions on commenting are designed to protect children from potential risks and unwanted content.
Flexible settings for parents
If parents want to completely disable comment viewing for their children, they can set the "Exploratory" setting for viewers ages 9 and up. Parents will be able to change the settings through parental controls on YouTube or using the Google Family Link app.

An interesting decision from YouTube 🤔 Allow children to view comments, but not write their own. On the one hand, it protects children from possible negative comments and trolling. However, on the other hand, it limits their freedom of expression 📝

In my opinion, comment control for children is a necessity. In social networks and YouTube in particular, there is a lot of dangerous and harmful content 🚫 It is better to be warned than to deal with the consequences later.
Світлана
I agree with Maxim. As a mother of two, I would like to have control over what my children see on the Internet 👩👧👦 YouTube's move is a good start to protect them from harmful content.

What about censorship and restrictions on free speech? 🤔 Children are also people with the right to their own opinion. Wouldn't it be better to teach them critical thinking and responsibility in the online space?
Грейс
Frank is right. Instead of restrictions, it is necessary to educate children's media literacy. Teaching them to recognize misinformation, trolling and profanity 👩🏫 This is much more important than just banning something.
Віктор
Of course, education and media literacy are the basis. But children are not always able to critically evaluate information and protect themselves from unwanted content 🙅♂️ Therefore, parental control on YouTube is a temporary protection until they grow up.
Ганна
I would not want my children to see offensive and obscene comments under the video. Therefore, I fully support YouTube's decision 👍 Let them first learn to filter information, and then they can write their own thoughts.

Here's another obstacle to children's freedom of speech and self-expression 🙄 Instead of restricting them, why not create a separate environment for children's comments, where they can communicate freely under the supervision of moderators?
Фелікс
All these new functions for parental control are just another step towards greater restriction of freedom on the Internet 😒 Soon adults will also not be able to express themselves freely in the comments on YouTube. The trend is obvious!
Роберт
So the old bruzga got out again with his grunt 🙄 But these are just new functions for protecting children online. No one forbids adults to communicate and express their opinions in YouTube comments ♂️ 🤷
Емілія
I think this is a good compromise from YouTube. Children will be able to view others' comments and gradually learn to distinguish useful from harmful ones 👍 But they won't be able to write their own until they grow up.
Артур
I don't think that limiting comments for children is something new and unexpected. Most social networks have long had age restrictions on certain content 🤷♂️ This is a necessity for a safe online environment.
Марко
Or wouldn't it be better to make a separate children's version of YouTube with full control of content and comments? 💭 So children could communicate freely in a safe environment, and parents would not worry about their safety.
Лаура
This is a really difficult question. On the one hand, children need protection on the Internet. But on the other hand, we shouldn't limit their right to self-expression 🤔 Maybe we need to find some balance between security and freedom of speech.
Томас
I'm sure this is a temporary fix from YouTube. Over time, they will find more effective ways to moderate content and comments 📝 For now, this is at least some protection for children in the online space.
