At the Lviv Media Forum 2024 conference, experts discussed the impact of social platforms on the division of the public. In particular, attention was drawn to the transformation of Twitter into X and its potential influence on public opinion.
Maksym Savanevsky, CEO of PlusOne Social Impact, expressed concern about X's impact on American politics:
“X has become a powerful tool for polarizing society, especially in the context of American political life. The 'All-In' podcast, where four supporters of Trump and Musk discuss politics and the economy, is getting a lot of promotion through the platform. Governments should pay attention to this threat to social unity."
Fighting disinformation
Panelists noted that popular social networks have limited tools to counter disinformation, although it successfully combats other types of malicious content. David Patrikarakos emphasized that authoritarian regimes are more effective at using loopholes in algorithms to spread manipulative messages.

“Telegram is both a risk and an opportunity. The low level of moderation makes it attractive for spreading misinformation, but at the same time it is a valuable resource for journalists covering the situation in Ukraine."

The panelists agreed that in order to combat polarization, clear rules for the use of social networks and the responsibility of platforms for the spread content The government should also play an important role in regulating activity in social networks.
