Windows 11 Recall: An amazing program without NPU on an old Snapdragon
An enthusiast demonstrated the operation of the new Recall feature in Windows 11 without using a specialized neural processor (NPU), which contradicts official Microsoft requirements.
Recall function
Recording what is happening on a PC
Recall technology is designed to record all actions on a computer, allowing you to later restore or search for data. Officially, Microsoft requires a processor with NPU performance greater than 40 TOPS, 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. At the moment, only Snapdragon X Elite and Plus processors meet these requirements.
Working on old hardware
However, the enthusiast managed to run Recall on a computer with an older ARM processor Snapdragon 7c+ that does not meet the specified requirements. The main functionality worked correctly, although some tasks still require a separate neural processor.
Outlook for x86 systems
Recall is currently only available in the preview build of Windows 11 24H2 Build 26100.712, but its AI integration does not work due to the lack of x64 models. However, the developer assumes that after the release of the corresponding models, the function will be able to work on systems with Intel and AMD processors without an NPU. However, Microsoft may decide not to enable this feature for devices without a specialized neural processor.

Interestingly, Recall in Windows 11 can work without a special neural processor. Apparently Microsoft has decided not to limit this feature to new systems only. 💡

Yes, good news for those with old computers! But the AI models for x64 are not yet available, so you will have to wait for a full launch. But it's already progress. 🚀

I'm more interested in how this feature will work on regular Intel and AMD processors. It seems that Recall will be able to use them, but performance may suffer. We need to wait for the tests. ⚡

I'm wondering if Microsoft will include these features for video cards and other hardware that can handle the AI model? What if they decide to limit only NPU. 🤔

Hmm, why bother with this Recall? It would be better to focus on system optimization and security, rather than adding all sorts of unnecessary features. 😒

Gerd, why are you such a grumbler! 😄 New technologies are progress. Of course, safety is important, but innovation is also important. I'm waiting to try Recall in action.

Victoria is right, we shouldn’t dismiss new chips in the bud. Remember how voice assistants were once criticized, but now everyone has them in their smartphones. 🗣️ So Recall may be a useful feature.

I agree, Pavel. Plus, Recall is just an add-on to Windows 11, not something required. Those who don't want to don't have to use it. 🆒 But it’s a cool thing for enthusiasts.
