Blue Screen of Death in Windows 11 24H2: How to fix problem with Western Digital SSD
Windows 11 24H2 update causes problems with some Western Digital SSDs due to incorrect memory buffer allocation, resulting in Blue Screen of Death .
SSD problems
Errors in Windows 11
In The latest Windows 11 24H2 update has encountered unexpected problems. Users have encountered conflicts when using certain NVMe SSD models from Western Digital.
Error occurrence
Most often, the “blue screen of death” appears when working with WD Black SN770 and WD Blue SN580 drives. The peculiarity of these models is that they do not have their own DRAM cache and use system memory for caching through HMB (Host Memory Buffer) technology. Users have found that the reason lies in incorrect allocation of the memory buffer, which can be corrected by editing the Windows registry.
Features of SSD
Most modern SSDs are equipped with built-in DRAM memory, which serves as a buffer between the controller and NAND memory, speeding up file operations. Drives without DRAM cache usually support HMB technology, which allows the controller to directly access system memory.
The essence of the problem
Typically, SSDs use about 64 MB of system memory, sometimes this value can exceed 100 MB. However, in the case of SN770 and SN580, the memory capacity for HMB reaches 200 MB, which leads to a conflict that causes BSOD.
Current situation
There are currently no official solutions to the problem on the Western Digital forum.

Wow, I just updated to Windows 11 24H2 and now I'm constantly seeing a blue screen! 😱 Anyone else have this problem?
Hans
Isabella, yes, me too! This appears to be related to the Western Digital SSD. Do you happen to have a WD Black SN770?
Isabella
Hans, exactly! I have exactly SN770. How did you know? 🤔 Is there any solution?
Pierre
I read that the problem is with the memory allocation for HMB. It seems like it can be fixed through the Windows registry, but I would be careful. 😅

Guys, I’m thinking, maybe this is a chance to upgrade the SSD to a model with DRAM? 🤑 Has anyone used these?
Viktor
Eh, youth... Always give you new items. In my time, computers worked without any SSDs or anything, they lived somehow. And now I panic because of every update.
Hans
Victor, times are changing! 😄 Sofia, I wouldn’t rush. I'm sure Western Digital will release a patch soon. Yes, and Microsoft should fix this in the next update.
Isabella
Thanks for the tips, guys! 🙏 For now I’ll roll back to the previous version of Windows. Hans, let me know if you find a working solution!
