Starting May 1, Ukrainian domain registrars are launching an action to popularize the KYIV.UA domain as part of the domain de-Russification movement initiated last year.

Purpose of the campaign
The main idea of the campaign is to motivate users to switch from Russian-language regional domains (KIEV.UA, ROVNO.UA, KHARKOV.UA) to Ukrainian-language versions of domains (KYIV.UA, RIVNE.UA, KHARKIV.UA). For three months, registrars will offer discounts and talk about the importance of choosing domains with Ukrainian spellings of cities.
The problem of Russification of domains
Currently, the Ukrainian domain system uses 17 incorrect local domains , created in the early 1990s. They contain Russified, communized or incorrectly transliterated names of regional centers.
Focus on the Kyiv domain
The capital domain KYIV.UA is the most popular among regional domains zones, so it is the focus of the campaign. Registrars encourage users to choose the Ukrainian-language domain KYIV.UA when creating a new site and provide instructions for a gradual transition from existing Russian-language domains without losing traffic.
Mirror domains
KYIV.UA and KIEV.UA are mirror domains. If a user owns the domain shop.kiev.ua, the name shop.kyiv.ua is automatically reserved for him. Only one person can register mirror domains and only with one registrar.
Results of last year's promotion
Last year, a similar promotion lasted two months and showed good results: 1,780 new registrations occurred in the KYIV.UA domain zone, the domain grew by 60%. After the campaign, the Russian-language domain KIEV.UA decreased, while KYIV.UA increased and continues to grow, but is still significantly behind the Russified domain.
