iPad Pro M4 display defects: graininess and HDR issues
New iPad Pros with M4 are experiencing OLED screen issues, including grainy effects and HDR rendering errors on some blues, which may be due to manufacturing and display design issues.
iPad OLED defects
Screen graininess
Owners of the new Apple iPad Pro tablets with an M4 processor are complaining to "grain" artifacts on OLED displays. Despite the bright images and advanced technology of essentially two combined screens, the panel appears to be flawed. Some users have reported on Reddit about the flaw, which is especially noticeable against dark backgrounds and in darkened rooms. In photos of the screen, the grain appears quite significant against the background of dark interface elements.
Cause of the effect
A possible cause could be the so-called Moire effect, which means unevenness between pixels , which is often caused by incorrect screen backlighting. If a pixel receives too low a voltage, its appearance may differ from its neighbors. This effect occurs on LCD displays that rely on a separate backlight, as well as on OLED panels.
Causes of
The occurrence of this deficiency is usually associated with the peculiarities of the production process. Displays made up of multiple layers can sometimes be imperfect. It is also likely that some contamination occurred during manufacturing that affected the crystals of the OLED panel.
This effect is a fairly common problem encountered by many manufacturers and suppliers, and is often difficult to avoid. In many cases, this phenomenon is not considered a defect.
HDR bug
Previously, another problem was discovered on iPad Pro M4 displays - incorrect HDR display on some shades of blue (dark blue and indigo) . In images, HDR highlights disappear and appear as white or distorted areas. Similar artifacts are not present on other Apple devices with OLED screens, such as the iPhone 15 Pro.
User Comment
"The best way to spot this is to look at the character wearing the dark blue shirt. The folds seem to shimmer like a spider's web , superimposed on the surface. Sometimes part of the image appears as an ink stain."
Apple has not yet commented on the graining problem, but is already working on a software fix for the error with incorrect HDR display.

I am very disappointed by these shortcomings on the new iPad Pro 🤯 It would seem that for such a lot of money the screen should be perfect! Especially the grain on a dark background looks terrible 😕

In fact, slight pixel unevenness occurs on almost all displays due to manufacturing techniques. But I agree that on such an expensive device it shouldn’t be noticeable to the naked eye 🧐

Has anyone had problems with HDR on blue tones? I haven’t noticed this, but it’s very strange that this bug only exists on iPads, while on iPhones everything is fine 🤔

Guys, don't panic! 😄 These are all little things that are not that important in practice. I have been using Apple products for a long time and have never regretted the purchase, despite some shortcomings. The main thing is the convenience and performance of the devices 💻⚡️

This is all due to old display technologies. I hope that in the future Apple will switch to something more modern and of higher quality in order to get rid of such artifacts 🤞 In the meantime, apparently, we will have to put up with...

I think Apple will fix these bugs in the next updates anyway. The company always listens to user feedback 👍 In the meantime, you can set the brightness lower so that defects are not so obvious.

You know, I read that similar problems occur not only with Apple, but also with other brands with OLED displays. Perhaps it’s just the technology of the panels themselves 🤷♀️ In any case, I hope that manufacturers will find a solution in the future!
