April on the labor market: more vacancies, lower salaries - what's happening?
In April 2024, there was an increase in the number of vacancies for IT specialists in the labor market, reaching record levels on the DOU and Djinni platforms, which reflects the overall situation in the industry. At the same time, the increase in the number of vacancies and the decrease in competition did not affect the level of wages in the field of information technology.
Personnel shortage
Growing number of vacancies
According to Work.ua, the number of vacancies continued to increase , while the number of applicants decreased slightly, which led to a further weakening of competition. In April, employers posted a record number of vacancies on Work.ua - 111,095 job offers since the full-scale invasion. This significant increase in job offers has driven the average number of applications per job opening per month to its lowest level since the conflict began.
Growth of IT vacancies
The field of information technology is no exception. According to DOU, companies posted 5,021 job openings in April, 218 more than in March. This is the second time since the beginning of the year that the number of vacancies has exceeded 5,000, something not seen in 2023. Recruiters posted 10,486 vacancies on Djinni, which is 672 more than in March. The greatest growth in vacancies was observed in the iOS, C++ and PHP categories, as well as for quality assurance (QA) specialists.
Applications and hiring
In April, candidates applied to 13,086 vacancies on Djinni, which is 600 more than in the previous month. However, the number of applications continued to decline, albeit at a slower pace, reaching 20.76 responses per vacancy per month (in March it was 21.1). At the same time, 963 hirings were recorded on Djinni in April, which is 140 more than in March, and only 40 less than in April last year.
Salaries are not growing
Despite the increase in vacancies and hiring, the salaries of IT specialists are almost not changed. According to Djinni, the salaries of senior developers hired in April are at the same level as last year, but junior and middle developers receive $200-$500 less. The median salary for developers with no experience returned to the standard $500 (in February it fell to $400), and developers with at least one year of experience lowered the bar to $625 (in January it was $800). Applicants with two years of experience were asking for an average of $1,650 in April, up from $2,000 a year ago and $2,500 in 2022. Developers with 3-4 years of experience lowered their salary expectations by $500 compared to last year. The average salary expectations of candidates with 5-6 years of experience were $4,000, and with 7+ years of experience – $5,000, which is the same as last year, but $500-$1,000 less than in 2021.
April's top hires
In April, Djinni saw an abnormally large number of vacancies for Solutions Architect specialists. Of the top six positions, four were for solutions architect, one for data architect. The highest paying jobs offered salaries up to $10K.

Interesting article. It looks like the talent shortage in the IT industry is really growing. But I am surprised that wages do not increase. What do you think about this?
София
Yes, this is very strange 🤔 Usually, when there is a shortage of specialists, companies try to attract them with higher salaries. Perhaps the general economic downturn played a role here?
Ян
Or companies are simply not yet ready to raise wages, hoping that the situation will change. Although, I agree, this is not the best strategy in the long term. 💼💸

I think companies are just trying to save money where they can. IT specialists are still needed, so vacancies open up, but they don’t want to pay more. This, of course, can lead to an outflow of personnel. 😕

All this talk about salaries and vacancies is complete nonsense! 🙄 In my time, people worked not for money, but for an idea. Now everyone is just thinking about how to earn more money. Ugh!

Grumpy, don't be such a grouch! 😄 Of course, not only salary is important, but also working conditions, growth prospects, etc. But it cannot be denied that the financial side also matters.

Maybe the fact is that many companies now prefer to hire junior developers to save money? 💰 And experienced specialists, accordingly, are not so in demand.

Great idea, Pierre! Plus, don’t forget about remote employees. Perhaps companies hire specialists from other countries where salaries are lower. 🌍 In any case, the situation is interesting, we will monitor the developments!
