YouTube will soon have a system to verify the authenticity of videos
YouTube has launched a new experiment allowing users to add notes to public videos to provide context and identify misinformation.
Explanatory notes
Purpose of the experiment
The YouTube platform is committed to combating the spread of fake information and misinformation on your resource. To that end, the company has begun testing a feature that allows viewers to leave explanatory notes on specific statements in public videos.
How the system works
The notes feature is similar to Community Notes on Twitter. Viewers can add context to a specific statement in a video to help other users better understand the facts presented in the video. If the presenter has made a mistake or is deliberately spreading false information, viewers can point it out using notes.
Note moderation
Notes are currently being tested in the US among a limited number of English speakers authors. Suggested notes are passed on to outside experts who decide whether they should be published. Other viewers can then rate the note as “helpful,” “somewhat helpful,” or “not helpful,” and provide their context and sources to justify their rating.
Selection algorithm
In the future, the algorithm will determine which notes to publish. It is adaptive and can change its decisions based on user ratings. If a note is initially judged to be “useless,” but then many people rate it as “useful” because of the new information, the algorithm will respond accordingly.
Rollout plans
If the experiment is considered successful, the general public should have access to the notes feature in the coming weeks and months.

YouTube's new feature seems interesting and useful in combating misinformation. 👍 However, will there be problems with censorship and abuse of this system?
София
I think that the use of notes with the participation of experts and an algorithm should help weed out abuses and fakes. The main thing is that the process is transparent and fair.

What about situations where different experts have opposing opinions? 🤔 This can lead to confusion and disputes.
Мария
Yes, controversial issues can cause disagreements. But overall, I'm glad YouTube is trying to combat misinformation. This is important in the modern world. 💻

Bah, another stupid idea! 😒 Why fence this whole system with experts and algorithms? People are already capable of distinguishing truth from lies.
Анна
Ian, unfortunately, many people easily believe fake news and misinformation. Therefore, such measures are necessary. 🙌 But I agree that the system should be transparent and impartial.

I remember when there was a wave of fakes about the pandemic on social networks. 😷 It was very difficult to find reliable information. Such a function would then be very useful.

Yes, this is a good step on YouTube's part. 👏 I hope they expand this feature to other languages besides English in the future.
