Record figures in the capital
On July 11-12, 2024, Ukraine found itself in the grip of unprecedented heat. Temperature records were recorded in Kyiv that exceeded those of many years ago. The minimum daily temperature in the capital was +21.7°C, which is 0.3°C higher than the 1937 record. The maximum temperature reached +34.2°C, breaking the 1885 record by 0.5°C. The average daily temperature of +28.1°C exceeded the climate norm by 7.2°C and set a new record, surpassing the 1922 figure by 0.5°C.
Temperature maximums by region
The highest temperatures were recorded in the following areas:
- Mykolaiv region - 40.2°C (July 10 recorded 40.5°C)
- Kherson region - 39°C
- Kropyvnytskyi - 37.5°C
- Zaporozhye - 37°C
- Vinnitsa - 36.3°C
- Odessa - 36.2°C
- Sumy - 35, 1°C
- Uzhgorod - 34.3°C
- Lviv - 33.4°C
- Ternopil - 33.1°C
Causes and forecasts
The Odessa region broke the temperature record that had held since 1947. In Zaporozhye, during July 10-12, the temperature remained around 37°C. The cause of the abnormal heat was the influx of hot tropical air from northern Africa. According to the forecasts of the Ukrhydrometcenter, a decrease in air temperature is expected only from July 20.
Additional difficulties
The situation is aggravated by the fact that Ukrainians are unable to use air conditioners or fans for most of the day. Due to devastating attacks on power plants, there is not enough capacity, and electricity consumption is limited by special schedules.

What a horror! 40 degrees in Nikolaev 🥵 How do people even survive there?
Hans
Yes, the climate is clearly changing. It’s also hot here in Germany, but not so hot. But this is only the beginning of summer!
Sophia
Isabella, I heard that many people take refuge at fountains and in parks. But it’s really hard without air conditioning 😓 Especially considering the restrictions on electricity.

I wonder how this will affect the harvest? I hope the farmers can cope. Maybe we should think about new irrigation methods?

Guys, the heat here in Kyiv is also unbearable. But we are holding on! 💪 The main thing is to drink more water and stay in the shade.

Eh, it was better before! All these records, global warming - it's all nonsense. Summer is just hot, like the good old days. There is no need to panic.
Maria
Giovanni, what are you doing? This is a serious problem. This heat can be hazardous to health, especially for older people and children. We need to look for solutions and not brush them off!
Andrzej
I agree with Maria. Maybe we could create public air-conditioned 'cool zones' where people could go during the hottest part of the day? 🤔
