Ukrainian teenagers won the international artificial intelligence hackathon
Ukrainian teenagers, winners of the Teens in AI international hackathon on artificial intelligence, developed an innovative ConnectAbility application for learning and understanding sign language using neural networks and MediaPipe technology.
Innovative application of gestures
Champion team from the Polytechnic
A team of young Ukrainian programmers from the KPI Polytechnic Lyceum named after I. Sikorsky won the Teens in AI international competition, ahead of teams from Great Britain, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Thailand. Their project ConnectAbility became the best among the presented innovative solutions using artificial intelligence.
A unique development for gesture communication
ConnectAbility is a mobile application based on neural networks that helps people learn sign language and provides translation of gestures into text or voice. The developers recorded video footage with samples of dactyl and common gestures to train the neural network. The program uses MediaPipe technology to detect key points on the user's hands, and the coordinates of these points are analyzed by a neural network based on TensorFlow using a classification algorithm for gesture recognition.
Ukraine's first victory at the Teens in AI hackathon
This year's participation of Ukraine in the Teens in hackathon AI proved to be successful on the first try thanks to the victory of a team of high school students from ConnectAbility. Winners will receive valuable prizes from the organizers, including Apple tablets, invitations to AI training sessions and free access to AI image processing courses.

This is nonsense! 🙄 Firstly, sign language is not that common. Second, AI has more important applications than gesture recognition. Third, these hackathon trends are just ridiculous. Young people should focus on something serious and not have fun.

@Vasyl, you are wrong! 🚫 Projects like ConnectAbility are extremely important for the integration of people with special needs into society. And hackathons are a great opportunity for young people to try their hand at solving real problems with the help of AI. 🙌 Don't forget that innovations often started as "funny trends".
