Ukraine launches production of Shmavik, a competitor to the Chinese DJI Mavic
The Ukrainian company has launched into mass production its own analogue of the Chinese DJI Mavic quadcopter, popular among the military, called “Shmavik”.
Ukrainian drone
Origin of the name
The name of the drone "Shmavik" was suggested by an authoritative person in the country, and he liked it developers. However, in the Ukrainian army since 2014, all light reconnaissance drones, regardless of origin, have already been called “shmaviks”.
Cost of development and production
The creation of a drone analogue of a Chinese quadcopter cost 500 thousand US dollars. It took about a year to design and test. In February 2024, the drone was successfully tested in conditions of active radio interference. To date, the company has manufactured over 300 drones.
By June 1, the company plans to launch the first production line with a capacity of 500 devices per month. By the end of summer, production volumes should reach 2,500 units per month. In addition, the company begins production of components for Shmavik at a new plant in Poland. According to the CEO, the combined production capacity of the two sites will allow the production of up to 5,000 drones per month.
Cost and equipment
The price of the Shmavik kit is similar to its Chinese counterpart - about 3500 US dollars. It includes: a transport case with a drone, a smart remote control with a 10-inch screen, five batteries, four spare propellers, a charging station, cables and repair tools.
Technical characteristics
Advantages of "Shmavik"
- Increased structural strength allows the drone to be repaired and maintained in the field.
- The drone is equipped with a standard release system for installing two ammunition weighing 500 grams each.
- At maximum load, the drone is capable of flying for up to 35 minutes within a radius of 15 km from the operator; without ammunition, its flight duration reaches 75-80 minutes depending on conditions.
- The main advantage of the Shmavik is protection from enemy electronic warfare systems due to the constant change of operating frequencies.
- The drone's navigation system is built on the basis of a GNSS receiver and a directional GNSS antenna that cuts out false data. If counteraction is impossible, the system turns off satellite navigation and switches the drone to manual control mode.
Glossary
- DJI Mavic is a popular line of compact consumer quadcopters from the Chinese company DJI.
- GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is the general name for global navigation satellite systems, including GPS, GLONASS and others.
- EW (electronic warfare) - a set of measures aimed at ensuring the effective use of one's own radio electronics and radio suppression of enemy systems.

Great news for our Armed Forces! 🇺🇦 A completely Ukrainian drone will be an excellent alternative to Chinese models, especially in war conditions. The good news is that it is protected from enemy electronic warfare and has a long flight time.

I also heard about this new Ukrainian drone. I am impressed by its characteristics - 75-80 minutes of flight without ammunition and a range of 15 km. 💪 Plus, the possibility of repairs in the field is also very valuable.

Yes, this is a significant technological breakthrough for the Ukrainian defense industry. 🚀 Production on such a scale speaks of the great ambitions of the developers. I like the idea of Polish production of components - this will allow us to increase volumes.

Heh, “Shmavik” is a cool name! 😆 Although it’s unclear where it came from. But the main thing is that this drone performs well in real combat conditions. Its technical characteristics are impressive.

Wow, a whopping $500,000 spent on development! 💸 But if the drone is really that cool, then the investment was worth it. Protection against electronic warfare is a big plus in modern warfare.

And I'm a skeptic. 🧐 I doubt that Ukrainian developers were able to surpass their Chinese counterparts in one year. And the price of $3500 seems too high for our economy. But I'm glad to be wrong - as long as everything works!

It’s great that our military has its own reliable drone! 👏 Import substitution is very important under sanctions. And the fact that it can be repaired in the field is an invaluable advantage for the front.

I'm shocked by the speed with which our developers created an analogue of the Chinese drone! 🤯 To design, manufacture and launch into series in one year is simply incredible. Moreover, with improved characteristics and protection against electronic warfare. Bravo!
