TSMC increases chip prices outside Taiwan: implications for the electronics market
The world's largest chipmaker TSMC plans to increase prices for chips produced outside Taiwan, which could lead to higher prices for a wide range of devices.
Rising chip prices
Production diversification strategy
TSMC, a leader in the semiconductor industry, is forced to revise its pricing policy. Due to the desire to expand the geographic location of production facilities outside of Taiwan, customers will have to pay additional costs for producing chips in alternative locations. TSMC CEO Xi Wei noted the need to distribute increased costs between the company, customers and competitors in the face of fragmented global supply chains.
Rising costs in Taiwan
In addition to rising costs of overseas production, TSMC is facing rising operating costs on his home island. The rapid increase in electricity tariffs and the consequences of the recent earthquake have a negative impact on the profitability of operations. Technological challenges in mastering the advanced 3nm process technology also lead to additional costs.
Impact on the consumer market
Industry leaders like Apple, NVIDIA, AMD and Qualcomm, being key clients of TSMC, will be forced to incur increased costs when ordering chips from the company's new enterprises in the USA, Japan and Germany. Manufacturers are expected to pass on these costs to end consumers by raising the prices of their products.

It looks like prices for technology products will continue to rise. The news about TSMC is worrying. 🤔 I hope this doesn't affect the market too much.

Indeed, the situation is difficult. But TSMC is a key player in the market; a lot depends on them. Diversification of production is a reasonable step in the current conditions. 📈

On the one hand, the desire to protect against possible risks is understandable. But on the other hand, price increases will hit consumers. 😕 I hope companies find a balance.

I'm more concerned about the dependence on Taiwan for chip production. 🇹🇼 This creates a vulnerability for the entire tech industry. I'm glad that TSMC is diversifying its geography.

Again newfangled things and prices are rising! 😠 In my time everything was simple and cheap. Why these chips and technologies if everything works like that?
MikeT
I understand @GrumpyOldMan's concerns, but progress cannot be stopped. 🚀 It is important to find ways to make new technologies accessible to everyone.

TSMC's decision is a forced measure due to the geopolitical situation. 🌐 But I'm glad that they are investing in new factories, including in Europe. This will reduce the risks.

As a consumer, I hope that price increases will be minimal. 💰 But I understand the need for TSMC to secure production. This is better than a chip shortage!
LuigiP
@JuanC, I agree, the shortage is even worse. 😓 But companies will have to find a compromise between security of supply and prices for customers.

Technological progress always has costs. 💻 But the benefits of industry development outweigh. New TSMC factories are a step into the future.

It's good that TSMC is diversifying production, but I'm worried about the impact on product prices 📈. I hope companies find a solution so they don't burden consumers too much.

Ideally, of course, we would like prices to remain stable. 💰 But I understand the complexity of the situation for TSMC and am willing to pay a little extra for security of supply.

Indeed, the situation is difficult. But I’m glad that TSMC is taking measures 🏭 to reduce risks for stable chip production, on which a lot depends.
JuanC
I'm also willing to pay a little more if it helps secure the supply of chips. The shortage will create many more problems. 🆘 But TSMC needs to find a balance.

Progress is impossible without investment and temporary difficulties. 🚧 The main thing is that TSMC's new factories will benefit the industry and consumers in the long term.
