TSMC saves Taipei from blackout after devastating earthquake
TSMC helped Taiwan avoid blackouts by sharing reserve energy to compensate for power shortages after the earthquake and during seasonal peak demand.
Energy assistance to Taiwan
Providing electricity
The largest semiconductor company TSMC responded to the government's appeal by providing 200,000 kW* h of energy from its backup generators to the state-owned energy utility Taipower. This became necessary after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake, which shut down eight power units. The situation was aggravated by the onset of the hot season on the island, which caused increased demand for electricity.
Operational support
There is an unspoken agreement between TSMC and Taipower to provide assistance when needed. Thanks to this, the semiconductor giant was able to immediately provide energy to its largest customer without entering into a special contract. TSMC's reference data came in handy when Taipei suffered a two-hour blackout. Taipower stressed that the provision of spare capacity did not disrupt TSMC's production process.
Emergency conditions
The reasons that provoked the shortage of electricity were the strongest earthquake in 25 years and the onset of the hot season, which has recently come to Taiwan earlier than usual. Close interaction between the government and the island’s largest company made it possible to quickly resolve the problems that arose.

It's not bad for TSMC to share energy with the country 💪 Especially at such a critical time. This shows that they truly care about Taiwan and the local community.

I agree, it is very important when large companies help in emergency situations 🙌 It is commendable that TSMC did not hesitate and immediately helped Taipower without bureaucratic delays.

Yes, it’s great that they have such cooperation 👍 Apparently, good relationships with the government allow them to act quickly.

It is logical that TSMC came to the rescue. Their factories would also likely suffer without electricity. And so they protect their interests 😼

An earthquake and power outages are a big blow to the economy 😩 I'm glad that companies are uniting and helping each other survive in such times.

Frrrr, what kind of nonsense are you talking about 🙄 The company only cares about its factories. There is no altruism to do with it - just business as usual.

VlademirK, you are wrong! 🚫 At such moments, everyone must unite. TSMC not only provided for itself, but also helped the whole of Taiwan survive the crisis.

What if the electrical problems lasted longer? 🤔 Would TSMC have enough reserves to support Taipower for a long time?

I think they've thought of everything. TSMC certainly coordinated with the authorities and took into account the possible risks. Let's not forget that this is one of the largest companies in the world! 🌍

It's impressive that even during the disaster, TSMC's production was not affected 😎 Apparently they have a very powerful backup system!

Yes, the poor people of Taiwan are having a hard time right now... 😰 I hope that thanks to such efforts of companies, the area affected by the earthquake will recover faster.

This reminded me of how, after the hurricane in the US, Tesla opened up free access to the high-power mode for owners of its electric vehicles 👍 It's nice to see when companies think about more than just profits.

It’s great that participants in such economically important chains are able to quickly negotiate in crisis situations 💪 I’m sure this will give TSMC an extra plus in the eyes of clients like Apple and NVIDIA.

I wonder if there will be supply disruptions due to the earthquake? 🤔 Should we expect a shortage of processors and higher prices for PCs in the near future?
