The Portal - New virtual installation connects New York and Dublin
New York and Dublin have come together in real time thanks to the innovative Portal project created by Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gilis, which allows people on both sides of the Atlantic to interact with each other via video.

Overcoming barriers
The "Portal" project is an installation connecting two cities at a distance of about 4830 km from each other. Portals are equipped with large round screens and cameras that transmit images to the associated Portal. This initiative was intended to demonstrate the ability of art to overcome physical barriers.
Bringing People Together
According to Gilis, “Portals are an invitation to meet people across beyond borders and differences, to experience our world as it really is - united and complete." Live streaming opens a window between remote locations, allowing people to transcend their social circles, cultures and geographic boundaries, embracing the beauty of global interconnectedness.
Cities Partnership
Lord Mayor of Dublin Daithi de Roist expressed his excitement at the event and announced the partnership, highlighting its significance as Dublin takes the title of European Smart Tourism Capital in 2024. He added that the Portal project symbolizes Dublin's desire to unite not only within the EU, but also with cities such as New York, with which they share deep historical and cultural ties.
“This project is an example of technology and engineering combining to bring communities together around the world,” said the Lord Mayor.
The Portal project, connecting New York and Dublin, began work on May 8 and will last until the fall of 2024.

Wow, this virtual bridge The Portal is a cool idea! 🤩 It's cool that now you can travel to another continent and communicate with people as if they were nearby. It would be great to try.

I heard about this project. It’s a pity that you can’t fly there from Germany 😕 But the idea itself is amazing, especially for dating and cultural exchange. Would you like to participate?

Virtual reality is great, but personally, I still prefer live communication. Although, maybe someday I’ll try this Portal to get acquainted with new technologies 💻

Hi all! I recently saw a report about this project. I think this is a great way to reduce distances and experience new cultures without leaving the country. Would you be willing to communicate, for example, with New Yorkers through a portal? 🗽

Portals are definitely a great idea, but I'd like to wait for more accessible technologies for everyone. After all, for now this is an experimental project between only two cities. But in general, the concept of virtual reality really attracts me! 🌍

I think I saw this thing on video... It looks cool, but in my opinion, it's just another unnecessary hype 🙄 What's wrong with regular video calls? Spend time with your loved ones live, and not in some strange portal.

I don't know, I like the idea of The Portal 🤗 What a great way to meet people from other countries and cultures! And at the same time you travel virtually, which is much more convenient and cheaper. Have any of you already tried such a portal?

Eh, nowadays you won’t be surprised by anything 😑 Why bother with these portals if you have Zoom and Skype? A good old video call is just as good. And new technologies are a waste of money and energy 🚮
