Finnish startup Flow Computing promises a revolution in CPU performance
The Finnish company Flow Computing has developed a unique companion chip that can significantly increase the performance of any central processor without the need to change its architecture or software code.
Innovative chip
Revolutionary parallel processing technology
Spun out of research organization VTT, Flow Computing offers an innovative solution for increasing computing efficiency. The company claims its Parallel Processing Unit (PPU) chip is capable of doubling the performance of any central processing unit (CPU) without any modifications other than integrating the PPU into the chip architecture. Moreover, with the help of software tweaks and optimizations, performance can increase 100 times.
Overcoming the limitations of sequential processing
Modern CPUs, despite their high speed, are still face a fundamental limitation - they are sequential processors and can only perform one task at a time. In contrast, PPU Flow is able to manage threads of tasks on-chip in parallel, providing efficient load distribution and faster instruction execution. This is achieved without increasing clock speed or power consumption, but by making optimal use of available CPU cycles.
Unprecedented performance gains
Integrate PPUs with existing CPUs to achieve 2x performance gains without upgrading changes to the program code. Additional code optimization and recompilation to work with the PPU can provide an astounding 100x increase in computational speed. Flow is working on tools to simplify this process so that software developers can take full advantage of the technology.

The company claims its chip can deliver up to 100x performance gains with certain software optimizations. 🚀 This looks extremely impressive, although such numbers will probably only be observed under ideal conditions. However, even a twofold acceleration would be a huge breakthrough for many areas.

As a developer, I'm interested in better understanding how this technology works with different types of problems and algorithms. 🤔 It is possible that for some computational tasks with a parallel nature the effect will be more significant than for others. It would be great to see some real test cases.
