The US is deploying a large satellite program to combat threats from Russia
The Pentagon launched a group of small and inexpensive satellites into Earth orbit. According to information from The New York Times article, this is done to counter space threats from Russia and China.
What happened?
News about this appeared after the US received intelligence about the possibility of Russia attacking American satellites. Accordingly, the Pentagon launched a missile detection system into orbit. It became part of a broader program to expand the US military presence in space.
The launched satellites are called Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensors, or HBTSS. They are designed to detect missiles that may be launched by China, Russia or other countries. This gives the United States more options to stop these missiles.
It should be noted that such a scenario indicates US concern about the growing power of Russia and China in space. This situation forces the US to use new methods to protect critical communications, surveillance and GPS systems on the battlefield in the future.
Why is this important?
U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks expressed the view that the United States is moving to new, stable and low-cost satellites that can be launched regularly. This is a new strategy that involves the use of hundreds of cheaper satellites in extremely low orbit.
This strategy is similar to SpaceX's Starlink space internet, which already has more than 5,000 satellites in orbit. It is worth noting that the prototype of the Pentagon system was launched by a SpaceX rocket.
The main idea is that if an enemy destroys several US satellites, the system can still operate by switching to other units in the orbital network.
