An unexpected alliance: running Windows XP on an Intel 486 processor
A computer enthusiast managed to run the outdated Windows XP operating system on an old Intel i486 processor not designed for it by modifying the system code for compatibility.
Windows in the past
The impossible is possible
A lover of old computers managed to achieve the impossible - run the Windows XP operating system on an Intel processor i486. Although at first glance these two components seem to be from completely different eras, in fact only ten years passed between their release. However, they were considered incompatible until an enthusiast proved otherwise.
Time Lapse
Windows XP was released in 2001 and was popular among PC users until its support ended in 2014. And the Intel i486 processor, released in 1989, was Intel's flagship until the Pentium appeared in 1993. Thus, the periods of existence of these two components did not overlap.
System requirements
The minimum system requirements of Windows XP made it impossible to install it on the i486. The OS required at a minimum a Pentium (586) or compatible processor running at at least 233 MHz, 64 MB of RAM, and at least 1.5 GB of hard drive space. The i486 had a frequency of only 133 MHz, although some copies could be overclocked. In addition, systems based on i486 usually had less RAM.
Hacker Techniques
An enthusiast named Dietmar used debugging and decompilation tools to study machine codes operations. With detailed information, he replaced the opcodes that disabled the incompatible processor with ones that the i486 understood. After making these changes and adjusting other incompatibilities, he was able to achieve success. The computer started working, although the system information was displayed incorrectly, as can be seen in the screenshot.

I've heard that some people still use Windows XP for older production lines and specialized equipment. Perhaps this development will help them extend the life of the systems 🤔

This is ridiculous! Why would anyone go through such difficulties with running an old system on ancient hardware? 🙄 Time moves forward, and we need to use modern technologies rather than cling to the past.

At first I also thought why this was necessary, but then I remembered how we played old games on our parents’ computer as children 🕹️ It was fun and nostalgic. So I understand enthusiasts who want to maintain a connection with the past 😊

I'm actually surprised that an old OS can run on such an ancient processor 😮 I wonder how modern applications behave in this environment? Probably very slow 🐢
