Gaming Dictionary
A New Era of Terminology
August 26, 2024 was marked by an important event for the Ukrainian gaming industry - the release of an updated version of the dictionary of video game terminology. This event became a key step in the process of unifying the language of Ukrainian gaming.
Significance of the update
The new edition of the dictionary is a powerful tool that will help translators, developers and players achieve better mutual understanding. It contains modern terms used in current video games and gaming environments. Standardized terminology is designed to improve the quality of localizations and stimulate the development of the domestic gaming industry.
Translation examples
The updated dictionary offers the following translation options for some terms:
- marudnitstvo, marudity (grind);
- s_cha (slasher);
- multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA);
- hack and slash;
- numogray (let's play);
- zdobich (loot).
History of creation
Work on the dictionary began in 2021 on the initiative of the National Commission on Standards state language. The first version of the working document was submitted on June 28, 2022. Over the past two years, experts have improved and expanded the vocabulary, taking into account the dynamic development of the industry.
Development team
A team of professionals from various areas of the gaming industry worked on the creation of the dictionary. It included representatives of localization companies UnlocTeam and SBT Localization, as well as independent experts: translators, game journalists, streamers and developers. The dictionary is distributed under a Creative Commons license with attribution on a non-commercial basis.
Solving industry problems
The updated dictionary aims to solve a number of problems in the industry. Among them is the lack of established terminology, which made the work of translators difficult and reduced the quality of localizations. In addition, the dictionary will help beginners quickly master the specifics of translating video games.
Invitation to cooperation
The working group invites all interested parties to join in the further improvement of the dictionary.

It's great that such a dictionary has appeared! Now translations of games into Ukrainian will be much better. I was especially pleased with the translation of 'grind' as 'marudnitstvo' - it conveys the essence very accurately 😄
Emilie
Luca, I agree! And I really liked the translation of 'multiplayer online battle arena' - 'richly rich battle arena'. It sounds very Ukrainian and still makes sense 👍

Guys, have you noticed that not only translators, but also streamers and developers worked on the dictionary? It’s very cool that they took into account the opinions of different industry experts!
Sophie
Javier, exactly! This should make the dictionary as useful as possible for everyone. I wonder how often it will be updated? After all, the gaming industry is developing so quickly 🎮
Heinrich
It's all nonsense. Why are these translations needed at all? Let everyone play in the original and learn English. And then they come up with some kind of “sich” instead of the normal word “slasher”.
Luca
Heinrich, I disagree. Localization is important for the development of the industry. It makes games more accessible to those who don't speak English. In addition, it helps to preserve and develop the language 🇺🇦
Emilie
And it seems to me that 'sicha' is a great option! It sounds dynamic and reflects the essence of the genre. Luca is right, this is important for the development of language and culture 💪
Aleksandra
Guys, did you know that the dictionary is distributed under a Creative Commons license? This means that it can be freely used and expanded. Maybe we can offer our own translation options? 🤔
