Google is expanding access to its darknet monitoring tool, making it free for most users. This feature allows you to check whether your personal information has fallen into the hands of criminals.
Security from Google
New features of Dark Web Report
Google users will soon have free access to the Dark Web Report service. Previously only available to paid Google One subscribers, this useful security feature will now be available to almost all free accounts.
What the report checks
Dark Web Report searches the hidden networks of the Internet, access to which is possible only through special software. The service looks for sources of personal user data, including name, address, phone number, email, and social security number (for US citizens).
Launch dates and availability
The feature is expected to be generally available at the end of July 2024. Most regular Google accounts will be able to use this service, with the exception of corporate accounts. It is worth noting that there are certain geographical restrictions: the service is currently unavailable to users from Russia, China, South Africa and New Zealand. Ukrainian users will be able to use this function.
How to use the report
Already now, users can visit the Google One page and initiate a scan by clicking the corresponding button in the lower right corner . If the system detects your data on the dark web, you will receive a message with information on the number of leaks containing your email address.
Security Recommendations
If your data is found on the darknet, it is recommended to take the following measures:
- Change passwords for compromised accounts immediately and consider using a password manager.
- If an email address associated with important accounts (bank or personal) is found to be leaked, create a separate email address exclusively for such purposes.
- Unfortunately, if other personal information (address, date of birth, etc.) has been leaked, this data may already be in the public domain.

Wow, that's cool! Google is finally doing something useful for the security of ordinary users. I wonder how effective this service will be? 🤔
Pierre
I agree, Olena! This is a really important step. I have been using similar services for a long time, but the free option from Google is a game changer. I hope this helps people pay more attention to their online security.

Wow, I didn't even know my data could be on the darknet! 😱 Do you think I should use this service if I already change my passwords regularly?
Hans
Maria, definitely worth it! Even if you're careful, data leaks can happen because of the sites you use. This service will help you to be aware of such situations and react in time. 💪
Grzegorz
All this is nonsense. Google just wants more of our data. It is better not to use the Internet at all than to trust these corporations. 🙄
Sophia
Grzegorz, I understand your concern, but I don't think giving up technology completely is the answer. This service can really help many people. You just have to be careful and think critically. 😊

Wondering how this will affect cybercrime? 🕵️♂️ Maybe hackers will start looking for new ways to hide information? Or will it make them more cautious?
Olena
Diego, good question! I think it might create some obstacles for attackers, but it's unlikely to stop them completely. The main thing is that we, the users, learn to protect our data better. Maybe Google will also release educational materials on this issue? 📚🔐
