Samsung Unveils Revolutionary 61.44TB SSD: The Future of Storage Is Here
Samsung introduced an innovative 61.44 TB SSD for the enterprise sector, using advanced 176-layer NAND memory and a new controller, opening up the prospect of devices with capacities up to 122.88 TB.

Samsung announced the release of its first SSD drive with a capacity of 61.44 TB. This high-capacity SSD is intended for use in the enterprise sector, and not for ordinary consumers. According to Samsung, their new controller can produce SSDs up to 122.88 TB, which is a significant increase from the previous maximum of 32 TB.
BM1743 Specifications
Samsung's new QLC BM1743 drive is based on 176-layer NAND memory of the seventh generation of 3D NAND technology. This device is the successor to the BM1733 released in 2020, which was a 15.36 TB (4 bits per cell) QLC PCIe Gen 4 drive and used 96-layer fifth generation V-NAND technology. The BM1733a had a maximum capacity of 32TB, while the BM1743 nearly doubles that.
Performance and Form Factor
BM1743 performance specs are impressive: 1,600,000 / 110,000 IOPS for random read/write , and the sequential read/write throughput reaches 7.2 / 2.0 GB/s. The drive is optimized primarily for read operations.
Both BM1733 and BM1743 are available in U.2 format (2, 5″), but the BM1743 additionally offers an E3.S variant with PCIe 5.0 support. The new model delivers 0.26 drive writes per day (DWPD) over the warranty period, an improvement over the BM1733's 0.18 DWPD. In addition, the guaranteed data storage time has been increased to three months, compared to one month for its predecessor.
Competitive landscape
Solutions from Solidigm, Samsung and Western Digital have already been presented in the 60 TB class enterprise SSD market (model SN655). It is expected that Micron, Kioxia, SK hynix (parent company of Solidigm) and Chinese manufacturer YMTC may introduce similar products in the near future.
