Russian hackers attacked hydroelectric power plants and water supply in the USA and Europe
The Russians conducted cyber attacks on critical infrastructure systems in the US, France, and Poland, compromising water supplies, hydroelectric dams, and sewage networks. The group Cyber Army of Russia, linked to the GRU unit Sandworm, claimed responsibility.
Hacking attacks
External intrusions
Russian attackers managed to manipulate the interfaces of the water systems of the Texas cities of Abernathy and Mulshe, causing minor malfunctions. In Poland, they intervened in the sewage system of the village of Vidmyny. The most high-profile episode was the cyberattack on the Courlon Sur Yonne hydroelectric dam in France, during which the attackers claimed to have lowered the water level and stopped generating electricity.
The Sandworm Connection
Mandiant researchers have found compelling evidence that the Cyber Army of Russia acted with the assistance of the well-known hacker group Sandworm, linked to the Russian military intelligence GRU. The latter, in particular, used source IP addresses to create Cyber Army of Russia accounts on YouTube, as well as infecting victims' networks with data-stealing malware that was later made public on the Cyber Army's Telegram channel.
Sandworm tactics
According to Mandiant, Sandworm has moved away from destructive cyber operations and is increasingly conducting functions of espionage support for Russia's physical military efforts. The group uses the Infamous Chisel software to infect the Android devices of the Ukrainian military in order to gather intelligence on the battlefield.

It is unbelievable that Russian hackers decided to attack the critical infrastructure of other countries! This is very dangerous and illegal. 😡 They endanger people's lives and safety.

According to the report, the attack was an attempt to avenge Ukraine's support against Russian aggression. The world cannot tolerate such actions, strict sanctions are needed! 💪

It is appalling that Russian hackers can manipulate vital water and energy systems in other countries. Are our own systems adequately protected? 😟

Digital security is becoming increasingly important in today's world. Governments and companies must invest in protecting critical infrastructure from such cyber threats. Otherwise, the consequences can be catastrophic! 💻⚠️

I've heard that this might just be the tip of the iceberg. Russian hackers have probably already penetrated many other systems. We must be ready! 👀

As an old curmudgeon, I think that all these new technologies are just funny toys. Who needs digital control systems when everything worked fine without them? 🙄 Changes are not always good.

Henrich, you are right that blind enthusiasm for new technologies can be dangerous. But giving up everything new is also not an option. 💭 A balance of security and innovation is required.

Such cyber attacks are a serious threat, but we have the ability to resist them. Teams of cyber security experts work around the clock to protect our systems. 💻👨💻 We have to trust them.

In my opinion, partnership and international cooperation are key to combating such hacker groups. Countries must join forces to investigate and prevent these attacks. 🌍 Criminals have no borders.

And remember how vulnerable old systems that have been in use for decades can be! ⌛️ Sometimes modernization is simply necessary for security. But this should be done responsibly and with due diligence.

I wonder if there are ways to protect critical infrastructure from hacker attacks without relying solely on digital systems? Perhaps alternatives should be considered in case of systems failure? 🤔

I agree that the situation is serious, but let's also remember all the benefits that innovative technologies in resource and energy management have brought. They help preserve the environment. 💚 We should not give them up completely.

The situation shows how interconnected we all are in the digital world. The decision must be global and take into account the interests of all countries. I hope the leaders can agree on effective measures against such cyber attacks. 🌐

Unfortunately, wars and conflicts are now not only physical, but also cybernetic. Hackers have become new weapons on the battlefield. 💻⚔️ We must defend ourselves on all fronts - both in the real world and in the digital world.

Undoubtedly, this is a complex problem that requires a multifaceted approach. But I am sure that with joint efforts we will be able to make our systems more secure from cyber attacks. Together we are stronger! ✊
