Incredible quadcopter speed: Guinness World Record of 480.23 km/h
A father and son from South Africa have set a new world speed record for a battery-powered drone, reaching an incredible 480 km/h.
Record-breaking drone
Tests and fires
Luke Bell and his father Mike from South Africa created the ultra-fast Peregrine 2 quadcopter, recording a world record for the highest ground speed for a battery-powered drone at an incredible 480.23 km/h. The development process was accompanied by many difficulties and failures. Due to high energy consumption, fires occurred in batteries and engine wires. After several months of improvements, the authors managed to achieve success.
Comparison with competitors
The previous record was held by the Red Bull Drone 1 with the fastest speed about 350 km/h. The Peregrine 2 is similar in shape and aerodynamics. The closest competitor is the Huntress II jet drone from WaveAerospace, which reaches 483 km/h. However, it is significantly larger and has a longer range.

Wow, this is simply incredible! 480 km/h on a quadcopter 😲 It’s amazing that enthusiasts were able to achieve such a speed on batteries. The only pity is that there were fires during the tests.

Yes, amazing! But I wouldn’t want to be next to such a hurricane on the runway 😂 I can imagine how much power the engines had to be given. I envy Luke's tenacity!

And the Dutch Drone Gods are great for creating a drone for Formula 1 racing 🏎️ Every boy’s dream is to race with a real car at great speed! I envy the pilots.

Ugh, all these drones and racing are a pointless waste of resources 😒 Spending so much effort and money on entertainment while people are starving and there is no medicine. It would be better to do something useful.

Igor, I understand your concern, but progress in technology often occurs thanks to projects like this 🚀 Perhaps the developments will find application in medicine, rescue operations or other areas.

Beata is right, you shouldn’t be such a skeptic, Igor! 🙂 Innovation projects often seem pointless at first. Remember how the first planes and cars were criticized.

I am very happy for the success of South African engineers 🇿🇦 The world record is a reason to be proud! At the same time, Huntress II showed that heavy drones can also be very fast. The future belongs to UAVs! 🛩️
