Elon Musk's unfulfilled promises: How the Tesla Cybertruck has changed
The Tesla Cybertruck has undergone significant changes since it was first announced in 2019. Many of Elon Musk's promises were not realized, including an affordable price, long range and some unique features.
Cybertruck Evolution
Unfulfilled Expectations
Tesla's electric pickup truck, unveiled last November, encountered a number of difficulties and did not live up to consumer expectations. Current Cybertruck models have less autonomy and a significantly higher cost than originally expected. The currently available version is valued at nearly $100,000.
Pricing policy
Elon Musk initially stated that the base version of the Cybertruck would cost $39,900, with more advanced versions costing $49,900 and $69,900, respectively. However, these promises were not fulfilled. In 2023, Tesla announced that the most affordable model would be offered for $60,990, but would not arrive until 2025. This price increase disappointed many fans of the brand and turned the Cybertruck into a premium car.
In August of this year, the company without prior notice raised the price of the all-wheel drive version of the Cybertruck to almost $100,000 and canceled the possibility of pre-ordering the most budget modification with rear-wheel drive for $61,000. It's currently unclear what Tesla's plans are for this version.
Range
In 2019, Musk promised that the most advanced tri-motor version of the Cybertruck would be able to travel 500 miles on a single charge ( about 800 km). This would make it one of the most autonomous electric vehicles, but this promise remains unfulfilled.
The automaker now offers an all-wheel drive Cybertruck for $100,000 with a 512 km range and model for $120,000 with an autonomy of 485 km. Tesla plans to release a “range extender,” a body-mounted device that increases the vehicle's range to more than 757 km. This accessory is expected to go into production in early 2025 and will cost an additional $16,000.
Unrealized projects
Elon Musk concluded the Cybertruck presentation with the unexpected announcement of the Cyberquad - Tesla's ATV. He stated that it would be a two-seater vehicle that was supposed to come out at the same time as the pickup truck. In fact, Tesla only released a $1,900 (now $1,650) kids version of the Cyberquad, but the full-size quad never arrived.
Amphibious capabilities
One of the most intriguing promises concerned the Cybertruck's ability to float for short periods of time. Musk claimed that the pickup would be watertight enough to cross rivers, lakes and even calm seas.
Although the Cybertruck is equipped with a “wading mode” that allows you to overcome water obstacles up to 76 cm deep for a limited time, this does not make it a full-fledged swimming vehicle. However, Musk has not given up on the idea, confirming it last December. Tesla plans to release an update that will allow the Cybertruck to overcome water obstacles of at least 100 meters.
Failed "crab move"
In 2021, Musk said that the Cybertruck will be equipped with four engines, one for each wheel, which will allow it to rotate 360° and move diagonally, like a crab. However, the project's lead engineer, Wes Morrill, said in April that although Tesla had experimented with this feature, it had not found any practical use.
