Greetings from Arrakis: Dune's recreated stillsuit works in real life
An engineering team has recreated the fluid collection suit from Frank Herbert's Dune, which is capable of converting moisture from sweat into drinkable water.
Dune Costume
Concept and execution
In the cult 1965 science fiction novel Dune by Frank Herbert, travelers On the arid planet Arrakis, they wore so-called “stillsuits” - special suits that convert moisture from sweat and other body secretions into drinking water, which is then supplied through a tube. The popular YouTube channel The Hacksmith decided to make this idea a reality and created its own version of the stillsuit.
How it works
Despite its not very presentable appearance, the homemade suit successfully collected moisture from the sweat of one of the team members. The engineers used a thermoelectric cooler, a small mesh device used to cool computers and other electronic devices. By passing an electrical charge through two different metal materials, one side of the cooler cooled significantly. The cold side was placed inside the suit, and moisture from sweat condensed on it.
Water collection and purification
The collected moisture flowed into a water bladder equipped with a built-in filter for cleaning, purchased at a sports store. Thanks to this device, the team member was able to drink water obtained from his own sweat through a special tube. This caused surprise among others: “Everyone thinks that I drink my own urine,” the participant in the experiment complained in the video.
Assessment and prospects
Of course, this homemade suit is far from ideal and is unlikely to allow long-term survival on lifeless Arrakis, where the novel takes place 20,000 years later. However, this experiment is a remarkable proof of concept, brought to life by the authors of Dune in just one day of work. In the future, such technologies can be significantly improved.

It's cool that they created such a costume from Dune! 🔥 Although it is simple, it still works. It would be great to develop this concept further.

Yes, really impressive! 😮 I wonder if they can put together a more advanced version? But the fact that they were able to bring the idea to life is great.

Wow, this really works! 😲 It’s a pity that the suit doesn’t look very good, but the main thing is that the principle has been proven. In the future they will probably make more aesthetic models.

Did you notice that they used a thermoelectric cooler? 🤔 Quite a clever solution for moisture condensation. It will be interesting to see how they improve the system.

A pointless waste of time. 🙄 A bunch of complicated devices to drink your own secretions? This has no practical use.

Come on, Giovanni! 😄 It’s fun to bring an idea from a book to life. Maybe not the most useful invention, but creative and fun. Have you ever done something similar yourself?

I agree, the idea looks crazy, but this does not negate its originality. 🧐 By the way, they mentioned that the events of Dune take place 20 thousand years later, so we still have plenty of time to improve the technology!

I'd like to see how a suit like this would work in real life. 💭 I wonder if a person can really survive by drinking only their own moisture? We need to do an experiment!
