Exclusive review
Ukrainian channel Andro-News on YouTube presented the world's first exclusive video review of an engineering sample of the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL smartphone, provided by Pixophone. Although this is a pre-release version, the final product is expected to differ little from the sample shown.
Updated design
The new Pixel 9 Pro XL shows significant changes in appearance. The device has acquired a resemblance to the iPhone, having received flat steel edges instead of the usual rounded edges. The camera block has undergone radical changes, now rising to about half the thickness of the smartphone. Despite the visual changes, the overall thickness of the device remains virtually unchanged.
Dimensions and specifications
In terms of dimensions, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is comparable to its predecessor and is only slightly longer than the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. The manufacturer has moved the SIM card tray to the bottom of the case. The back panel is made of frosted glass, and the smartphone itself is protected from water and dust according to the IP68 standard. Buyers will be available in four color options: black, gray, pink and white (porcelain).
Display and Performance
The Pixel 9 Pro XL screen is completely flat, with almost invisible side frames. The device features a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 1344 x 2992 pixels, a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a pixel density of about 487 PPI. The screen is supposedly protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Visually, image quality is comparable to the previous model, with perhaps a slight increase in brightness.
The entire Pixel 9 lineup is powered by the Tensor G4 processor, which delivers decent, though not market-leading, performance. Tests show that the new chip is 15% more powerful than its predecessor. Google also claims a significant increase in battery life. The smartphone will be available in 12GB/256GB, 12GB/512GB and 16GB/1TB storage configurations.
Cameras and software
According to Dmitry Golub, the main camera unit has not undergone significant changes compared to the Pixel 8 Pro . However, the front camera has received a significant upgrade, increasing the resolution from 10.5 MP to 42 MP. Unfortunately, the engineering sample does not allow testing the cameras, so a full comparison will only be possible after the official release.
Google Pixel 9 Pro XL will come with Android 15 pre-installed and a promise of seven years of support for system and security updates. The smartphone will receive a new Pixel Screenshot feature and other advanced features based on artificial intelligence. Pixel 9 Pro XL buyers will also receive a free year of Gemini Advanced.
The official release of the Pixel 9 series smartphones is expected on August 13.
