Deal details
OpenAI has signed a lucrative deal with powerful media conglomerate News Corp. Thanks to this, their artificial intelligence will be able to learn from the content of leading Western publications owned by the corporation, including the Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, Times and others. According to Reuters, the content will not be immediately available on ChatGPT after publication, but the AI will have access to both current and archived material.
Financial Aspects
Although OpenAI has not disclosed the financial details of this deal, the Wall Street Journal reports , which could cost more than $250 million over a five-year period. The news of the deal had a positive effect on News Corp shares, which rose about 4%.
The fight for copyright
Leading Western media have long been concerned about the issue of copyright infringement by artificial intelligence and the lack of adequate profit from the use of their content. Last year, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Adobe held meetings with the heads of news outlets including News Corp, Axel Springer, The New York Times, The Guardian and the FT to discuss challenges related to their AI products.
Lawsuits
In late April, the Financial Times and OpenAI agreed to use archived content to train algorithms, as well as display FT articles in ChatGPT with media links. However, already on May 1 of this year, eight leading American media sued OpenAI and Microsoft, accusing them of copyright infringement. The lawsuit was joined by newspapers belonging to the media groups MediaNews Group and Tribune Publishing, which are owned by the investment fund Alden Global Capital. This is not the first lawsuit against OpenAI by the media, as in December 2023, The New York Times also filed a copyright infringement lawsuit.
Other deals
A few weeks ago, Microsoft also struck a deal with the Financial Times to develop artificial intelligence models.

There are criticisms of AI and copyright from all sides 🤔 It's important that companies like OpenAI are transparent and find fair ways to compensate authors for their work.

Brrr, these new technologies scare me 😩 I'm old fashioned and I don't trust these artificial intelligences. They simply copy human labor and make money from it. It is better to keep everything as it is!

Hey @Boghdan, I understand your concerns 👴 But technology is constantly evolving and we have to find ways to coexist with it. OpenAI is at least trying to be legal and cooperate with the media, not just steal their content.

In my opinion, this kind of cooperation is beneficial for both parties 🤝 The media receives compensation, and OpenAI provides quality content for AI training. The main thing is to maintain a balance and not violate copyright.
