NVIDIA Introduces Revolutionary Vera Rubin Architecture for GPUs of the Future
At Computex 2024, NVIDIA announced a new Vera Rubin GPU architecture that will replace the previous generation Blackwell architecture. The new chips are expected to use HBM4 memory and support higher data transfer rates via NVLink 6 and CX9 SuperNIC interfaces.
Rubin Architecture
New Line of GPUs
NVIDIA introduced a new Vera Rubin GPU architecture at Computex 2024. This the platform will be the successor to the current generation of Blackwell chips and will use more modern and faster HBM4 memory. NVIDIA's presentation initially focused on artificial intelligence, but later focused on updating data center architecture.
Vera Rubin Features
According to NVIDIA, Rubin GPUs will be equipped with 8 memory stacks HBM4, and the more powerful Rubin Ultra version will receive 12 HBM4 stacks. In addition, the company plans to release a new Vera Rubin board with the Vera processor (VR200), which is a super chip that combines GPU and CPU. This platform will support high-speed NVLink 6 connections up to 3600 GB/s and CX9 SuperNIC network connections up to 1600 Gbit/s.
Blackwell update
In addition to the new Rubin architecture, NVIDIA also announced the Blackwell Ultra chip, as well known as the GB200 GPU. It will support 12 HBM3E memory stacks, increasing the supported memory capacity to 244GB, up from 192GB on previous models. While consumer graphics cards based on the Blackwell architecture have not been announced, the B100 and B200 models are expected to launch this year.
Release Timeline
According to NVIDIA, the Rubin architecture is scheduled to debut in early 2026. According to the company's new annual cycle, Rubin Ultra chips will appear in 2027. Information about consumer graphics cards based on Rubin has not yet been disclosed.
