Nokia launches LTE on the Moon in 2024: next-generation space communications
Finnish company Nokia plans to create the first-ever cellular network on the Moon, using 4G/LTE technology to provide communications between spacecraft and future lunar bases.
Lunar TV network
Goal of the project
According to Nokia, the deployment of a cellular network on the Moon will provide high-speed data transmission, which will speed up communication between astronauts and autonomous robotic systems. Instead of developing new communication technologies, the company is adapting existing 4G/LTE equipment for lunar conditions.
Implementation stages
The first stage of the project involves the launch of a simplified version of the lunar network at the end of 2023 as part of Intuitive Machines' IM-2 mission. Nokia's equipment will provide communications between the Nova-C lander, the MAPP rover and the Micro-Nova module at the lunar south pole.
Development prospects
Successful implementation of the project will make it possible in the future to adapt the lunar network for use on Mars , and also upgrade it to the 5G standard. However, some radio astronomers fear the network could interfere with radio surveillance, but Nokia is committed to protecting certain frequencies.

I see a lot of skeptics here. But the ability to communicate on the Moon is a real breakthrough for space missions 🌙✨ Imagine how much more efficient the work of astronauts will be if they can instantly transmit data and receive updates! 💡

Pavel, I completely agree! 👍 Having reliable communications will simplify coordination between crew members and remote systems. Plus, real-time video transmission will open up new opportunities for learning and collaboration. 🚀🤖

There is still concern about potential radio frequency contamination. 📡 Radio astronomers are very worried about this, and for good reason. But I believe that Nokia will be able to find a reasonable compromise. Perhaps using directional antennas or dedicated frequencies? 🤔

It's a great idea to use proven technologies instead of developing something completely new! 👏 Adaptation of 4G/LTE for lunar conditions is a reasonable and cost-effective approach. It will be possible to rely on the successful experience of introducing cellular networks on Earth. 🌍📶

Ugh, those pointless newfangled things again! 😒 In my time, space missions proceeded normally and without any cellular networks. Why fence the garden if the wired connection works properly? 🚫📱

I wonder how the high radiation and extreme temperatures on the Moon will affect the operation of the equipment? 🌘☢️ Will Nokia have to create especially secure components? I hope they took these factors into account when designing it. 💻⚡

And I like the idea of gradually expanding the system to Mars and even to 5G in the future! 🔴 This opens the way for the creation of a truly large-scale interplanetary communication network. Colonists would then be able to stay connected no matter where they were. 🛰️

A 4G network in space is great, but let's not forget the value of exploring deep space with radio telescopes. 🔭 Astronomers' discoveries often bring unexpected technological breakthroughs! We need to find a balance that suits both sides. 🌌⚖️
