Nissan plans to release an electric version of its iconic GT-R sports car using innovative solid-state batteries, promising revolutionary performance and efficiency.
Nissan Electric GT-R
Sports Car Revolution
The iconic Nissan GT-R sports car is getting ready for electrification. The Electric GT-R is expected to be a pioneer in Nissan's lineup to use solid-state batteries. As this innovative technology improves, the manufacturer hints at the possibility of significant improvements in the efficiency of the electric GT-R.
Impressive stats
In introducing the electric GT-R concept, Nissan is positioning it as a "revolutionary hyper-electric vehicle." Such ambitious statements are based on plans to install electric motors with a power of over 1000 kW (more than 1300 hp). For comparison, the most powerful version of the Tesla Cybertruck, the Cyberbeast, develops up to 845 hp. (621 kW).
Innovative battery technology
All this power is based on a new electric powertrain with all-solid-state batteries. Ivan Espinosa, Nissan's vice president of global product planning, notes that such batteries are particularly effective in sports cars, "because they can pack a significant amount of energy into half the volume."
Benefits of the new technology
In April, Nissan demonstrated a pilot line for the production of all-solid-state batteries for electric vehicles, calling this technology a breakthrough. This development differs from traditional lithium-ion batteries by approximately twice the energy density. The new technology promises increased power and shorter charging times.
Development Outlook
Espinoza hinted that the upcoming electric GT-R could be the ideal platform for the debut of new solid-state batteries. He also added: “In the initial stage, the cost may be high.” However, as technology advances, costs are expected to come down. Nissan plans to use all-solid-state batteries in a wide range of vehicles, including pickup trucks.
Design and technology
While Nissan has yet to officially announce the electric sports car, the concept sports the recognizable "GT-R" logo. It features e-4ORCE all-wheel drive technology for enhanced control and handling on tracks and twisty roads. Nissan developed the concept's exterior design in conjunction with its NISMO racing team to achieve maximum aerodynamic efficiency. To optimize performance, elements such as a two-level front spoiler and rear diffuser have been introduced.
