Artificial intelligence: leading experts warn of threats and challenges
An open letter from OpenAI and other artificial intelligence companies expresses concern about the rapid development of AI technologies and their potential threats to humanity if not properly controlled.
The Risks of Intelligent Systems
Warning Letter
A number of current and former employees of companies engaged in the development of artificial intelligence, in particular OpenAI, a Microsoft partner, as well as Alphabet's Google DeepMind, published an open letter. In it, they expressed their concern about the rapid technological progress in this field due to the lack of proper regulation.
Potential threats
The authors of the letter are concerned about such possible risks as deepening inequality, manipulation of information and even the potential loss of control over autonomous artificial intelligence systems that could pose a threat to humanity. They are convinced that the involvement of academia, politicians and the general public will minimize these risks.
Resistance from companies
At the same time, some companies may resist the introduction of control, because it may limit their opportunities and profits. Therefore, according to the authors of the letter, independent implementation of internal rules will not solve the problem. Mitigating potential threats requires external scrutiny from science, politics, and the public.
Insufficient state supervision
The current state supervision of companies developing artificial intelligence is not effective enough. These companies have information about AI risks, but are not required to share it with the public. Employees who can disclose these issues are often forced to sign confidentiality agreements that limit their options. In addition, they fear various forms of persecution in this field.
Letter signatories
The letter was signed by four anonymous OpenAI employees and seven former employees, including Jacob Hilton, Daniel Cocotajlo, William Saunders, Carroll Wainwright, Daniel Ziegler, and two anonymous . Ramana Kumar, formerly of Google DeepMind, and Neel Nanda, now of Google DeepMind and formerly of Anthropic, also signed off. Three well-known computer scientists known for their contributions to the development of AI also endorsed the letter: Joshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton and Stuart Russell.

I believe that the development of AI technologies can indeed carry certain risks if there are no proper controls. It is good to see that company employees are aware of this and are trying to draw the public's attention to this problem. 🤖 A balance between innovation and security is needed.

I agree with Anna. Losing control over AI is a serious threat, and its potential consequences should not be underestimated. Companies need to be more open about risks and work with the public to minimize risk. 🔐

I understand the employees' concerns, but are they exaggerating the threat? AI opens up huge opportunities for development and making our lives easier. Of course, control is needed, but you should not stop progress because of fear. 🚀

In my opinion, the risks of AI are very real. Imagine if these systems fall into the wrong hands or get out of control. This can lead to catastrophic consequences. Therefore, I support the idea of involving scientists, politicians and the public to develop appropriate rules and restrictions. 🔒

It annoys me that large companies often prohibit their employees from disclosing information. This prevents society from learning about real risks and adequately reacting to them. I am glad that these people decided to take such a step, regardless of the possible consequences. 💪

I wonder what the companies themselves think about this? It seems to me that they will resist any attempt at regulation, as it may stunt their development. On the other hand, losing control is not in their best interest either. 🤔

What nonsense! What kind of silly risks are they all afraid of? It seems to me that this is all just an attempt to attract attention and raise a fuss about nothing. Technology is evolving, and that's a good thing. Nothing terrible will happen. 😒

I can understand Gustav, but I cannot agree. History has proven more than once that new technologies can have unpredictable and sometimes catastrophic effects. Therefore, it is important to identify potential threats in time and take measures to minimize them. 🌍 Better to be safe than sorry.
