Cybersecurity expert Samy Kamkar, known for his YouTube channel Applied Hacking , conducted an intriguing experiment. He attempted to improve upon existing technology by using an infrared laser to detect text entered by a MacBook user from a distance and without direct visual contact with the keyboard.
How the technology works
The method is based on the long-known principle of using a laser beam to detect and decipher sound waves. Previously, this technology was successfully used to intercept conversations behind glass, and has now found application in identifying typed text at a distance.
Implementation of the experiment
Kamkar directed a laser beam through the glass onto the back panel of the MacBook. He then recorded the vibrations in the case caused by key presses and tried to decode them.
History of the idea
The idea of creating such a spy installation came to Sami 15 years ago, after he saw a demonstration by two hackers , which showed simple detection of keystrokes using a laser pointed at a laptop from across the room.
Experiment Results
Although the results were not perfect, Kamkar was able to achieve some success. In the presented screenshots you can compare the original text typed by the user and the text recognized by the system:
