Netflix abandons the budget subscription: what awaits viewers?
Netflix is ending its most affordable ad-free subscription, forcing users to choose between more expensive plans or watching ad-supported content in the UK and Canada.
Netflix changes
Basic subscription cancellation
Streaming giant Netflix has begun implementing its strategy by phasing out its most budget-friendly ad-free subscription at $11.99 per month. From now on, viewers in certain countries are forced to either increase their spending or accept watching movies and series with advertising inserts. This is reported by The Verge.
Notice to users
Some subscribers of the streaming service from Great Britain and Canada have already received a notification about the need to choose a new tariff plan. They were informed that the last day of using the current tariff is July 13.
New subscription options
Subscribers are offered a choice of $6.99 ad-supported plan, $15.49 ad-free plan, or $22.99 premium 4K subscription.
Phased-in changes
In January, Netflix announced its intention to phase out the basic plan for existing users as early as the second quarter, starting with Canada and Great Britain. Last year, the company already stopped offering the basic subscription to new and existing customers in those two countries, as well as in the US.
Company Strategy
Thus, Netflix directs its users to the ad-supported plan, following the trend of most other streaming services. The company also recently announced plans to launch its own advertising platform.

Wow, Netflix is raising prices again! 😮 It seems that you will have to agree to advertising or pay more. Do you think it is worth it?
Hans
I think this is a smart move on Netflix's part. Advertising will help them increase their profits and possibly invest more in producing quality content. Although, of course, browsing with ads can be annoying 🤔
Sophie
I agree with Hans! In addition, a cheaper plan with ads can attract new users who previously could not afford Netflix. This can be a win-win situation 🤝

And it seems to me that this can lead to the outflow of users. Many appreciate Netflix precisely because of the lack of advertising. I wonder how this will affect their competitiveness compared to other streaming services? 🤨

Eh, these new technologies and trends of yours... It used to be better - you turned on the TV and watched what was on. And now there is so much gloom with these subscriptions and advertising. Why is it necessary? 😒
Olena
Viktor, but now we have a much larger selection of content! 😊 We can watch what we want and when we want. Isn't that cool?
Isabella
I wonder if other streaming services will follow Netflix's example? 🤔 Maybe this will become a new trend in the industry. We would like competition to lead to better content quality, not just more advertising.

I think Netflix is experimenting with different monetization models. They may even offer more flexible rates in the future. For example, you could pay less if you watch fewer hours per month. That would be fair, wouldn't it? 💡
