Garbled GIFs in Google Messages: Issue when sending from iPhone to Android
Google Messages users have experienced distortion of GIF animations sent from iPhone to Android devices, loss of pixels and animation.
GIF Problem
What's going on?
Recently, Google Messages users on Android devices have been experiencing problems with GIF animations sent from iPhone being corrupted. Submitted images lose animation and some pixels. This issue occurs on Pixel, Samsung, and other Android devices, but does not affect all conversations between iPhone and Android. Even in group chats, different Android users may or may not have issues with GIFs from iPhone owners, making it difficult to discern a pattern.
Possible causes
Given the wide range of devices and carriers, it is unlikely that the problem is related to Android. The problem is most likely with the Google Messages app or iOS. Since there are no complaints about GIFs being corrupted when transferring from Android to Android, iOS is the most likely culprit, with a compression or playback error possibly the cause.
Timeframe
Although some Android users have reported this issue before, the number of complaints has increased significantly in the middle of May. It is noteworthy that Apple released iOS 17.5 on May 13, and its beta testing began on April 2. Additionally, the issue comes on the eve of Apple's rollout of RCS technology on the iPhone, which is expected to launch this year.
What's Next
More information may be available during WWDC 2024 next month. If the problem is related to iOS, then the solution may be found in the next operating system update.

It's no surprise that Apple has released a buggy update again. 📉 Every time it’s the same thing - new firmware, new problems.

Yes, the problem with iPhone GIF animations seems quite strange. Perhaps this is due to the transition to RCS? 🤔 Let's hope Apple fixes this in the next update.

I think Google Messages is to blame. I also have occasional problems with GIF animations in this app. 😒 Maybe we should try something else?

These compatibility issues between iOS and Android have always been a stumbling block. 🙄 Until companies begin to communicate better, such bugs will continue.

This issue doesn't affect me personally, but I've heard some users complain about the lack of animation in iPhone GIFs. This seems to be a fairly common bug. 💻

Ha, why even use these useless GIF animations? 👴 In my time, we made do with text, and it worked just fine. All these newfangled things only bring problems!

Perhaps it's not just Apple or Google. Maybe the problem is on the side of telecom operators? 📶 For example, GIFs from iPhone work fine for me.

I've heard that this problem is only specific to recent iOS updates. Apple will probably release a patch soon. 🛠️ In the meantime, you can try using other messengers to exchange GIFs.
