Qualcomm accused of falsifying tests of Snapdragon X chips for Windows laptops
Qualcomm has been accused of inflating the performance figures of its new ARM processors for Windows laptops. According to sources, OEMs were unable to reproduce the stated test results on their devices.

Conflicting performance data
Qualcomm was caught providing false test results for the new Snapdragon X Elite processors and Plus for Windows laptops. These chips were positioned as potentially competitive solutions for Windows on Arm compared to products from Apple, Intel and AMD. However, according to SemiAccurate, major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) were unable to replicate the results Qualcomm presented to the press on their devices.
Performance Difference
According to knowledgeable sources, at least two major OEMs manufacturers failed to achieve the level of performance declared by Qualcomm during testing on their computers. The company itself has not yet commented on the current situation.
Problems with optimization and cooling
At the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit conference, the first tests of future X Elite processors. Their results, which sources said were obtained under “fair” conditions, were lower than expected. Qualcomm explained this by using unfinished software. In addition, the tests were conducted in a "black box" - no one present could see the test settings, and vague comparison charts with competitors Apple and Intel could not be verified.
After receiving the X-series processors, OEMs were allegedly unable to replicate Qualcomm's stated benchmark results. In fact, the performance figures were "well under 50%" of the data provided by Qualcomm. The company's engineers attributed this to poor optimization of Windows for ARM and insufficient cooling of laptops. Even after improving the cooling systems, testers didn't come close to Qualcomm's benchmarks. One source compared the Snapdragon X Elite with Intel Celeron processors.
Qualcomm and Microsoft Promises
At the Snapdragon Summit, the company avoided technical questions about the upcoming X series, promising more detailed briefings before the release of the chips. Reviewers were also promised the ability to test the processors themselves. So far, these promises have not been fulfilled, although there is still time until the launch of the chips in mid-2024. The press could conduct testing at practical events, but all the software was pre-installed and configured in advance.
The information released by Qualcomm does not contain deep technical data - the company talks about potential camera specifications, etc., but does not provide detailed technical information. Only the number of cores, cache size, and clock speed are known, but there is nothing deeper than the standard specifications.
Before the laptops are released, it is difficult to confirm or refute the accusations against Qualcomm. Microsoft is expected to make announcements regarding Windows on Arm at its Build developer conference in May that could shed some light on this issue.
