NATO invests in innovative technologies of the future: artificial intelligence, robots and space
NATO is investing 1.1 billion euros in advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics and space development, to strengthen the defense potential of the alliance.
NATO Innovation
First Investments
A consortium of NATO member states has approved an initial set of recipient companies to receive funding from innovation fund of the union in the amount of 1 billion euros. These funds are aimed at supporting European technology firms that are developing the latest solutions in the fields of defense, security and sustainability.
Recipient companies
Four companies were first selected for investment:
- Fractile AI (UK) is a London-based chipmaker that aims to accelerate large language models like those that power ChatGPT.
- ARX Robotics (Germany) creates unmanned robots for various tasks - from lifting heavy objects to surveillance.
- iCOMAT (Great Britain) manufactures light and strong materials for vehicles.
- Space Forge (Wales) uses the conditions of space, including microgravity and vacuum, to manufacture semiconductors in orbit.
Further cooperation
In addition, the fund established a partnership with venture capital funds Alpine Space Ventures, OTB Ventures, Join Capital and Vsquared Ventures for further supporting investments in advanced technologies on the European continent.
History of the creation of the fund
NATO announced the establishment of this fund in the summer of 2022, a few months after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The alliance has promised to invest in technologies that will strengthen its defense capabilities. The fund is supported by 24 of NATO's 32 member states, including Finland and Sweden, which joined the alliance earlier this year.

NATO's investment in artificial intelligence and space technology is a very positive step. The development of such technologies will strengthen the defense capabilities of the alliance. 🙌 But won't this create excessive dependence on high technologies?
Emilia
Maxim, without modern technologies it is impossible to provide effective defense. This is a safety issue, not an addiction issue. At the same time, NATO investments will help European companies to develop and be competitive. 💪

You know, new technologies are good, but I'm more worried about the war in Ukraine. Will these investments help us resist Russian aggression? 😕
Григорій
Um, all this fuss about new technology is tiring of me. 😒 What is missing is normal human communication and mutual understanding between peoples. Without it, no works will help.
Анна
Gregory, I understand your doubts, but we must move forward. Investments in artificial intelligence and space are not only military solutions, but also opportunities for peaceful use. 🌍 For example, Space Forge can produce new materials for solar cells or medical devices.

Totally agree with Anna! 👍 I believe that these investments will be an impetus for the development of innovation throughout Europe. London-based Fractile AI, for example, can help speed up chatbots and voice assistants for businesses. It will make our life more convenient!
