Android 16 Baklava: Google reveals the sweet future of smartphones
Google is preparing Android 16, codenamed "Baklava", breaking the alphabetical order of names. Presentation expected at Google I/O 2025.
New version of Android
Upcoming release Android 16
According to reliable sources, Google is planning to introduce Android 16 Baklava at its annual Google I/O developer conference in 2025. It is interesting to note that this time the technology giant has moved away from the traditional alphabetical order in naming operating system versions.
Current situation with Android 15
While Android 15 has not yet appeared on Google Pixel smartphones (although it is already available on some Vivo devices), the corporation is already actively working on the next version - Android 16. Google is known for its love of “sweet” names for versions Android: So, Android 14 was codenamed “Upside Down Cake”, and Android 15 was codenamed “Vanilla Ice Cream Cake”. The new version of Android 16 will be codenamed "Baklava" (Baklava).
Change in naming tradition
Previously, Google strictly adhered to alphabetical order in Android codenames. It would be logical to expect that the next version would be named with the letter "W", but the company decided to move away from this practice. In connection with the start of development of Android 16, Google has set a new code name for the platform SDK version. In the AOSP Android version, min_sdk_version now uses Baklava.
Android Development Process
It's worth remembering that for Android 15 the min_sdk_version parameter was initially set to VanillaIceCream. When the operating system reached the first stage of platform stability, the name was changed from VanillaIceCream to Android 15. This process reflects the typical development process for new versions of Android.

Wow, Android 16 is coming! 🚀 I wonder what new features Google has prepared for us this time? Maybe better AI or a more advanced security system?
Sophie
Yes, Liam, I thought about that too! I think they can focus on optimizing battery and performance. And the name Baklava sounds delicious! 😋
Giovanni
Sophie, I agree about the battery! I would also add improved integration with wearable devices. By the way, does anyone know why they broke the alphabetical order? 🤔
Elena
Giovanni, maybe this is a hint of some revolutionary changes? 🤯 It would be cool to see tighter integration with Chrome OS or even a new device ecosystem!
Hans
All this is nonsense. Once again they will shove in a bunch of unnecessary functions that no one uses. It would be better to fix old bugs than create new ones.
Liam
Hans, don't be such a pessimist! Every update brings something useful. I'm waiting for improvements in AR and VR. Maybe Google will finally introduce something to compete with Meta Quest?
Amelia
And I would like to see more attention to privacy and data control. 🔒 Especially considering the latest leak scandals. Do you think Google will take this into account in Android 16?
Sophie
Amelia, great idea! Privacy comes first now. It would also be great to see more advanced features for people with disabilities. Android has always been good at this, but there is always room for improvement! ♿️💪
