Automattic, the owner of popular Internet resources WordPress, Tumblr and Simplenote, has entered into a deal for purchasing the Beeper multimessenger. The deal amounted to an impressive $125 million, according to an informed Bloomberg source. As a result of the deal, Beeper's 27-person development team, including co-founder Eric Migikowski, is under new ownership. Migikovsky will head the Automattic messenger division.

The acquisition of Beeper is part of Automattic's strategic initiative to integrate online messengers into key areas of your business. According to Eric Migikowski, Beeper will remain relatively independent, operating within Automattic's Other Bets division. Despite previous disagreements with Apple, Automattic has been a long-time investor in Beeper.
Beeper functionality
Beeper is a universal messenger application that combines various messaging services. Initially launched as a beta version in 2021, the service runs on the Matrix distributed database protocol. In April 2024, Beeper left beta testing with 115 thousand users and became completely free and available to everyone on various platforms, including Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, Linux and ChromeOS.
Next Steps
Beeper customers will be receiving a number of major updates on various platforms in the near future. Currently, the application supports 14 instant messengers and social networks, including Telegram, Signal, Instagram, WhatsApp, Slack and Discord. In the future, it is planned to introduce a premium subscription with expanded functionality. In addition, the teams of Beeper and the messenger aggregator Texts, previously acquired by Automattic, will unite under a single Beeper brand.
