MSI revolutionizes desktop PCs with the first motherboard to support CAMM2 memory
In collaboration with Kingston, MSI is the first to introduce a desktop motherboard that supports the new CAMM2 RAM format, which was previously exclusively used in laptops. The new board will be showcased at Computex 2024.

Compact form factor
MSI introduced the board Z790 Project Zero Plus with black and silver finish. The photo shows that instead of DDR5 DIMM slots, one CAMM2 module is used, secured with four screws to the right of the processor socket. This arrangement opens up new opportunities for installing cooling systems for the processor and the RAM itself, since traditional modules often interfere with the cooler, and the SO-DIMM form factor limits RAM cooling. CAMM2 can also become a relevant solution for compact computers.
Dual-channel configuration and 128-bit bus
CAMM2 is a new memory standard from JEDEC, designed to replace the outdated SO-DIMM. It combines dual-channel memory capabilities and 128-bit bus support into a single module. In laptops, such memory takes up 65% less space, and in desktops, the space savings can be even greater.
High speed and development prospects
The standard supports not only DDR5 memory modules, but also faster LPDDR5X modules. The latest CAMM2 LPDDR5X modules have a speed of 7500 MT/s and will be even faster in the future. The new MSI motherboard uses the Kingston Fury Impact CAMM2 module, which is a DDR5 module. Kingston is expected to apply an XMP profile to the module, potentially improving its performance.
