Apple's first AI image: Federighi's adorable puppy from Image Playground

Apple's AI revolution
First look at Image Playground
Apple revealed to WIRED a unique image created using Image Playground, a new AI image generation feature expected in iOS 18. While the capabilities of the Image Playground have already been demonstrated at WWDC, this is the first officially released image outside of promotional material.
Craig Federighi's personal creation
In the photo we see a cute dog in a holiday hat who happily smiles in front of the festive cake. This is not a random dog, but the pet of Craig Federighi - the senior vice president for software development at Apple. He created this image as a gift to his wife for their dog Bailey's birthday.

New horizons of AI in iOS 18
As part of the upcoming iOS 18 update, Apple announced two innovative features based on its AI - Apple Intelligence technologies. Genmoji will allow you to create unique emojis based on text queries, and Image Playground will open up the ability to generate a variety of images (though probably with a smaller range than Musk's Grok 2).
Integrating AI into Everyday Communication
Image Playground integrates directly into Messenger, allowing users to create images while communicating. The feature offers a choice of styles, including animation, sketch and illustration, as well as the ability to generate new images based on your own photos.
Competition in the AI market
Although these features are not yet available to the general public, they will be available at that time , when AI tools are being actively integrated into the software of all the leading tech giants such as Microsoft, Google and Meta.
Until these features are officially launched, Federighi's dog image remains the closest example of Image Playground's capabilities beyond carefully selected marketing materials.

Wow, finally Apple has shown something real with Image Playground! Wondering how good the image generator will be compared to the competition? 🤔

It seems to me that Apple always tries to make everything perfect before release. Bailey the puppy looks pretty cute! I wonder if we can create the same quality images of our pets? 🐶🎂

I'm more interested in Genmoji. Imagine how many creative emojis you can create! It can change the way we communicate in messengers. 😃
Oleksandr
Marco, I agree! Genmoji sounds pretty cool. But Image Playground can also be useful for quickly creating illustrations directly in messages. Imagine how much easier it would be to explain complex ideas!

See, again these fashionable things. Why would we need to generate an image when we can just take a photo? People used to communicate without all these frills and everything was fine. Another unnecessary feature that will eat up the battery.
Elise
Heinrich, but progress cannot be stopped! These features can be very useful for creative people or those who work with visual content. Imagine how this can help designers or marketers! 🎨

Elise is right! Also, Apple usually optimizes its apps, so hopefully the impact on the battery will be minimal. Also wondering how these features will affect the competition with Android? 🍏 vs 🤖

I think this is a great step forward for Apple. They are always trying to make technology more human and creative. Isn't it cool that Federighi used AI to create a personalized gift? It shows how technology can bring people together. ❤️
