Microsoft is confident that ARM-based Windows PCs will outperform the MacBook Air M3 in performance
Microsoft is announcing new Windows laptops powered by Qualcomm's Arm processors, which should outperform the Apple M3-powered MacBook Air in both computing and AI performance.
AI PCs
New Windows PC Features
Upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processors will provide plenty of power, Microsoft says for more active promotion of the Windows on Arm operating system. The company says the new AI-powered computers will outperform Apple's M3-powered MacBook Air in AI-accelerated computing tasks and software emulation.
Microsoft says laptops powered by Snapdragon X Elite will outperform Apple's Rosetta 2 in app emulation speed. Rosetta 2 allows programs designed for Intel processors to run on Apple computers with their own ARM chips.
Emulation and native application support
Application emulation has been one of the major challenges for the Windows on Arm platform over the past decade. Two years ago, Microsoft introduced x64 app emulation for Windows 11, allowing programs to run on devices with ARM processors without a native ARM64 version. Having native ARM apps will be key to improving the performance of future Arm-based Windows laptops. Google recently released an ARM64 version of Chrome optimized for new devices.
Plans for new Surfaces
Microsoft is reportedly planning to equip consumer versions of future Surfaces The Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 will feature Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processors instead of the Intel Core Ultra chips that will be available in business models.
AI capabilities in new PCs
Internally, Microsoft describes Snapdragon X Elite devices as "next generation Copilot AI computers." This sets them apart from existing PCs based on the latest AMD or Intel Core Ultra chips. The new class of PCs will be the first to have access to AI-powered Windows features, including AI Explorer, which lets you "get everything you've ever seen or done on your device."
New systems will have improved video streaming capabilities, access to Windows Studio background blur effects, and more. They will also provide the ability to create images using AI models for free, as well as provide options that allow Copilot to access your PC's context to improve hints and answers.
Presentation date
Microsoft's big AI PC reveal will take place on May 20, just one day before its annual Build developer conference.
