Discover the revolutionary power of Phi-3 AI models from Microsoft
Microsoft introduced Phi-3 compact AI models (mini, small and medium) that do not require powerful chips and can run on regular computers or even smartphones, providing functionality similar to GPT-3.5 at a lower cost the price
The new Phi-3 series
Compact AI models
Microsoft Corporation announced the release of three newest miniature models of artificial intelligence , belonging to the Phi-3 family: mini, small and medium. The smallest of them, Phi-3-mini, is able to function on ordinary computer processors, but show performance commensurate with GPT-3.5. According to a report by The New York Times, such a move will expand the availability of AI technologies.
Availability of Phi-3-mini
The least powerful Phi-3-mini model already appeared in the Microsoft Azure AI model catalog, as well as on the Hugging Face and Ollama platforms, where it can be found and used.
Advantages of compact models
- Phi-3-mini does not require expensive and high-performance graphics processors from Nvidia. It can work on standard processors and can even be installed on smartphones without an Internet connection.
- Since compact models require less computing resources, their application will be more accessible to private companies, which will contribute to the expansion of Microsoft's client base in the field of AI.
- However, lower power also means lower model accuracy. Therefore, Phi-3 is not suitable for the medical and financial industries, but can be successfully used for simpler tasks, such as targeted advertising or summarizing reviews.
- There is currently no information on the availability of the small and medium models, but the latter will have more power and a higher price.
Competitors and their compact AI models
Microsoft is not the only company developing small-scale artificial intelligence models. Its competitors, including Google, Anthropic, and Meta, also have their own compact AI models designed for simple tasks like building chatbots, summarizing documents, or helping with coding. These include Google's Gemma 2B and 7B, Anthropic's Claude 3 Haiku, and Meta's Llama 3 8B. The Verge columnist describes their capabilities.

While Microsoft's progress in reducing the power of AI models is impressive, I am concerned about the environmental impact 🌳 Will the proliferation of such models lead to increased energy consumption and carbon emissions? I hope companies will pay attention to this issue when developing and implementing new technologies 🌱
