Microsoft extends the life of Windows 10: A year of security for $30
Microsoft is offering Windows 10 users an extra year of security updates after official support ends in 2025 for a modest $30 fee. This solution is intended to provide a smooth transition to Windows 11.
The Future of Windows 10
End of support and security extension
Microsoft will end support for the Windows 10 operating system in October 2025. However, the company will give users the option of receiving security updates for an additional year for the small amount of $30.
Pricing Differences
It's worth noting that this Extended Security Update (ESU) pricing is for regular users only. Microsoft enterprise customers will have to pay significantly more: $61 for the first year, $122 for the second, and $244 for the third year of updates.
Explained by Microsoft Executives
Yusuf Mehdi, executive vice president and chief consumer marketing officer at Microsoft, explains: "Registered PCs will continue to receive critical and important security updates for Windows 10. However, new features, bug fixes, and technical support will no longer be provided."
ESU Program Enrollment Deadline
The option to enroll in the Extended Security Updates program will be available "closer to the end of support in 2025 ".
Microsoft's strategy and the transition to Windows 11
The short duration of providing additional updates to ordinary users is likely due to Microsoft's desire to be more proactive encourage the transition to Windows 11. This transition may require purchasing a new computer, as millions of devices cannot officially upgrade to Windows 11 due to stricter hardware requirements and enhanced security. Windows 11 is only supported on processors released since 2018 and on devices equipped with TPM security chips.

Wow, Microsoft offers a whole year of security updates for $30? Sounds good for those who are not ready to upgrade to Windows 11. 🤔
Sophie
Yes, Liam, but this is only for ordinary users. Corporate clients will have to fork out much more. Still, this is a temporary solution. 💼💰
Juan
But it seems to me that this is a cunning move by Microsoft to push people to buy new PCs with Windows 11. After all, many old computers simply will not support the new OS. 🖥️
Elena
Juan, you're right. But on the other hand, this gives time to those who cannot yet update their hardware. A year is a good time to save up for a new computer. 💡
Hans
All this fuss with updates is a waste of time and money. My Windows 7 still works great and I don't see any reason to change anything. New doesn't mean better. 😒
Sophie
Hans, but safety is important! Without updates, your computer can become an easy target for hackers. Maybe you should at least think about switching to 10? 🛡️
Liam
I agree with Sophie. Security is no joke. I'm thinking that $30 for a year is not such a big price to pay for peace of mind. And then, you see, I’ll save up for a new PC. 💪
Elena
Does anyone know if there will be an option to extend these security updates for another year after 2026? Or is this really the last chance for Windows 10? 🤔
