Leleka Wines: Taste of Ukraine in every drop
Leleka Wines is a Ukrainian brand that creates high-quality wines from local grape varieties. Despite the challenges of the pandemic and war, the company has achieved international recognition and continues to develop the wine industry of Ukraine.
Ukrainian winemaking
The beginning of the journey
Can you imagine endless vineyards under the bright sun? In fact, winemaking is a complex work that requires considerable effort. The average consumer, when buying a bottle of wine, rarely thinks about the long way that this drink has traveled, especially in the conditions of war.
Business is always associated with risk, especially during a crisis. But it is in such times that new ideas and projects are born that are able to endure and achieve success.
Consider the history of the Ukrainian brand Leleka Wines. Bohdan Panchuk, brand ambassador, will talk about the path from distribution to the production of his own wine, which has gained international recognition.
From distribution to production
The company started as a distributor, later created the Terra Initia line of Georgian wines. Striving to stand out among competitors, in 2017 they were the first to bring orange wines to Ukraine. At the same time, the idea of creating Ukrainian wine arose.
The path was not easy. The production of quality wine requires own vineyards and a professional winemaker. In 2019, the company began cooperation with the outstanding winemaker Zurab Kuchuhidze, and already on October 16, 2020, the presentation of the brand's first Ukrainian wine took place.
Challenges of the pandemic
Despite the pandemic, the company continued production. It turned out that the society was ready and even longed for Ukrainian products.
The name "Leleka" was not chosen by chance. Unlike other companies that choose names not related to Ukraine, the creators of the brand wanted their wine to be associated with the Ukrainian spirit and reflect national values.
Winemaking during the war
The full-scale invasion of Russia caused significant damage to the winemaking industry of Ukraine. Many vineyards were destroyed or occupied, warehouses with products were destroyed. But even in such conditions, Ukrainian winemakers continue to develop the industry and present their products on the international stage.
New trends in winemaking are currently being observed. The industry focuses on locality, new tastes and Ukrainian authenticity. Winemakers are experimenting with interesting varieties, including local ones.
Revival after losses
Leleka Wines suffered significant losses at the beginning of the war - more than 70 thousand bottles of wine were destroyed. However, the company found the strength to restart. There were problems with finding bottles due to the destruction of the Gostomel glass factory, and we had to look for suppliers abroad.
Despite the difficulties, the company's efforts paid off. The wines of Leleka Wines received numerous awards at the Austrian Wine Challenge international competition, including the gold medal for "Odesa Black" and the "winery star" award.
Experiments and innovations
The company constantly experiments and improves its products. For example, "Odesa Black" was the result of an experiment to create a gentle and drinkable wine from a variety that was traditionally used for tart wines. Experiments with wine aging in Ukrainian oak barrels are also being conducted.
Another interesting experiment is wine from the "Sukholimansky white" variety, which is distinguished by its sweet aroma and attractiveness. It is planned to create a sparkling wine from this variety.
Philosophy of success
The credo of the company is honesty before oneself and the consumer. It is important not to skimp on quality, because the modern consumer is very demanding. Belief in one's business and a team of like-minded people help overcome any crisis.
Leleka Wines continues to grow, recently launching a new line of sparkling wines. The company demonstrates that belief in one's business and striving for perfection is the key to success even in the most difficult times.
