Eric Schmidt - ex-CEO of Google promotes the development of shock AI drones for Ukraine
Former Google chairman Eric Schmidt is developing a new project related to the use of attack drones with artificial intelligence that could be used in Ukraine, according to a Forbes report.
So what do we know?
- A startup called White Stork will produce affordable, possibly disposable kamikaze drones that use artificial intelligence for visual guidance.
- These drones will be able to work even without a GPS signal.
- Drones will also carry additional explosive devices.
- Last August, documents were submitted for business registration under a number of LLCs.
- One of the project's employees, Sebastian Thrun, is a co-founder of the Google Innovation Lab.
Eric Schmidt's opinion
Schmidt has been calling for an increase in the number of drones for the war in Ukraine since the submission of documents to the White Stork project.
In a column for the Wall Street Journal published in July, Schmidt noted that after a few months of training, soldiers will be able to operate drones that fly at very high speeds and are difficult to maneuver. Each drone will cost around $400.
Schmidt wrote another column for Foreign Affairs, entitled "Ukraine Loses Drone War." In it, he claims that Ukraine and its allies should invest in the development of technologies that can counter Russia's new drones.
None of the columns mentioned the White Stork project.
Eric Schmidt's Experience
After working at Google, Schmidt worked as a technology advisor to the US government. He was the first chairman of the Defense Innovation Council from 2016 to 2020, where he had to advise the Pentagon on new technologies. He then chaired the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence, created to make recommendations to the president and Congress.
What else is important to know?
Recently, OpenAI changed its policy to allow the development of military targets and also announced cooperation with the Pentagon.
Undersecretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks announced that the Pentagon plans to spend more than $1.8 billion on artificial intelligence and machine learning for the next fiscal year.
Ukraine has the "Drone Army" program, which includes the purchase of drones, their repair and pilot training.
