Experts express concern about about the reusable Shenlong spacecraft, developed in China. The latest maneuvers of this unmanned ship suggest its potential use against satellites. It is speculated that Shenlong could be used to interact with or return satellites. During the third mission in June, the device released an object that moved away several kilometers and then came back closer to a distance of several hundred meters.
Dual Purpose
Marco Langbroek, a lecturer at the Delft University of Technology, notes: “There are undoubtedly military applications for this device, including detailed study of enemy targets or disabling them. However, it can also be used for peaceful purposes. The experience of such capture and release is useful, for example, to refuel our own satellites."
Comparison with X-37B
The American secret spacecraft X-37B, created by Boeing, has already made seven launches and conducted similar experiments. Victoria Samson of the Secure World Foundation think tank in Washington notes these similarities but urges caution in drawing conclusions. “To be honest, I doubt the significant military value of both devices. Most likely, they demonstrate technological capabilities,” she comments.
Military reaction
The US military is keeping a close eye on Shenlong. General Stephen Whiting, head of the US Space Command, states: "We assume that any Chinese space activity has a dual security purpose. It is important for us to understand what that dual use may be, and we are committed to being well informed about it."
International reaction
Indian officials, who wished to remain anonymous, share the Americans' concerns. "The spacecraft in question is definitely a cause for concern. Such developments can always have a dual purpose," they note.
