The study focused on patients with sleep behavior disorder (iRBD), where people physically reenact their dreams. Approximately 75-80% of patients with iRBD eventually develop synucleinopathy, a group of cerebral disorders characterized by the accumulation of the protein alpha-synuclein, which is associated with parkinsonism. The artificial intelligence tool analyzed the blood samples of these patients and found that 79% of the blood profiles of iRBD patients matched the blood profiles of people with Parkinson's disease.
Long-term follow-up
Even more impressive, the researchers followed these patients for ten years. The AI's predictions were correct: the team correctly identified 16 people who had developed Parkinson's disease, some as early as 7 years before any symptoms appeared.
This extended follow-up period strengthens the validity of the test and highlights its potential for early intervention.
